I have the police coming round later...

...and I'm shitting it. Even though I've done nothing wrong.

NC but a regular - don't want this linking to my usual name

I live in an apartment block with my husband and 5 year old son. We have owned and lived there for 10 years. Had the odd issue with noise of smoking of weed but it usually dies down when the concierge has had a word.

A new resident, tenant, moved in approx 4 months ago. Began to smell weed in the communal area. Had a word with consierge who said he would ask around.

Have been in the lift with/immediately after resident and they stink to high hell of weed.

Keeps happening so much so i was having a pee this morning and could smell weed in my bathroom.

There are other issues with this resident - they have a dog which is against the head lease and their tenancy. They seem to have a bltanat disregard.

Management company are being wet hankies because they can't "directly accuse someone" if they don't have concrete evidence. Also the resident is in the process of transitioning and is of Asian heritage I think. As such, they're scared to be seen as vicitmising this person, who is also unde rpolice protection apparently for having had death threats from family for their choice to transition.

Black, Pink, Blue, Green, round, fat, thin... I don't care. None of that bothers me.

What bothers me is my family and my home being inflicted upon by this selfish person.

I went and banged on their door and they wouldnt answer. then had the audacity to say to the consierge they felt uncomnrtable in their own home.

I have reported it to the police, again. Had a call at 3.30 from the police. I am not home but they are passing it to another office who will be in touch after 4.30.

Why do I feel sick and nervous when we/I have done nothing wrong.

I am fed up of having to smell weed in my home. I am fed up of feeling like I have to check for it in my own home. I am fed up of this person's blatant disregard for other people.

Not sure why I posted... hand hold I suppose.

We had this in our old street and there ended up being a dawn raid as it turned out they were growing cannabis! My neighbour reported the smell of weed after he had been putting something in his attic. Then the police did some sort of heat vision thing and then a dawn raid! We live in a street full of young families so it came as a complete shock. I hope it gets sorted out for you too.

CroqueMademoiselle · 08/08/2019 18:33

I do feel for you as noise and smell pollution is very intrusive in your own home and can cause someone to develop anxiety. However, I'd start by involving the local council anti social team for advice rather than the police unless you feel threatened.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/08/2019 18:45

Where does it say this person was vulnerable. Did I miss something.
However with police cuts op. I highly doubt they have the time to worry about some weed. It’d be a brilliant world if that was all they had to deal with.

Elision · 08/08/2019 18:53

YABU. Humans are not Skittles and ‘I don’t care if they are pink or blue’ or however you put it is a racist thing to say. Getting the police involved in the life of a vulnerable person of colour who is doing NOTHING to harm you is a horrific and dangerous thing to do. You need to get the fuck over yourself and grow up.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/08/2019 18:55

I understand how annoying it must be but reporting somebody for smoking weed is SUCH a waste of police time when they are stretched enough as it is investigating serious crimes. What do you seriously think they will do about it? Unless your neighbour is growing enough to be considered intent to supply the police will not be interested.

SirJamesTalbot · 08/08/2019 19:01

I doubt if the police will come around to investigate a smell of weed in your flat. I'd be more concerned that they might think you're harassing your neighbour over their ethincity or self-identify and charge you with something.

Bwekfusth · 08/08/2019 19:02

Not really sure why anyone is being quite so harsh to the OP here. I used to live on the top floor of a listed (therefore completely dilapidated) building, the scummy unemployed waster of a downstairs neighbour smoked weed all day. And all night. My flat stank to high heaven, as did the communal hallway. It absolutely stank. It was constant, having visitors was embarrassing, the children were constantly asking what the smell was. He actually had the cheek to report us for the noise my children were making playing and running around aged 2 and 4 at the time (after thorough assessment - police and environmental health and everything - it was determined that the floorboards were massively substandard and there was literally nothing we could do about it apart from not walk around in our home, it was also noted that the noise the children's footfall were making wasn't particularly excessive or unreasonable from the demonstration we gave when they went in to scummy neighbours flat and asked us to prance around) and it was advised we ignore his aggressive bashing on the ceiling as we weren't in the wrong. In the end, we encouraged the children to make as much fucking noise as humanly possible, we joined in, one day we called the police and said he was dealing, and that I felt threatened by people ringing my buzzer asking to be let in to see him. he was visited by several police officers, and left soon after. I understand you OP, it's really not a nice way to live. At all.

  • @Awwlookatmybabyspider Where does it say this person was vulnerable.*

The OP says they are under police protection due to death threats from their family.

Sarahandco · 08/08/2019 19:17

It sounds like you are not in the UK?

ohyesohyessyyesyes · 08/08/2019 19:31

I had exactly this.
The people in the flat downstairs were growing cannabis as it turned out.
I quietly mentioned it to them and invited them to come up and investigate for themselves.
Since then, they took much better precautions about the smell. Of course this was for their own benefit as much as for mine as they didn’t want to get caught. They were very pleased that I approached the directly first. From them on, they looked out for me big time, helped me a lot, and ended up quite good friends actually.
They also had a dog. They didn’t know he was unhappy in the daytime until I told them about the barking.
Could you not politely but assertively approach your Neighbours before going to the police?

GermaineBunbury · 08/08/2019 19:52

The police don't care. Especially not about personal use. They might use it if they want to get someone off the streets for something else, but for your average non-dealing user they do not give a shit.

They won't do anything about my busily dealing neighbour with a dope plant on his 4-year-old-son's window sill, he's not a big enough fish in the chain. Your neighbour isn't worth the resources.

RosaWaiting · 08/08/2019 20:04

I can see why you’re annoyed but banging on the door of someone you know is under police protection isn’t right.

The dog thing surprised me more tbh, it’s not like you can hide a dog from the concierge and hope that no other residents report you.

Have you written to the person and said how much the smell impacts you?

C8H10N4O2 · 08/08/2019 20:13

Is it just a son or do you have twins?

DaphneFanshaw · 08/08/2019 21:39

Oh you beat me to it with the twins comment. It's not MN bingo till twins are involved.
Lets see, you've logged it with the police, have you considered a spa day or maybe chilling out with a Torch

NoBaggyPants · 08/08/2019 21:44

I'm going for the dog being the twin!

Quirky twist and bingo!

DaphneFanshaw · 08/08/2019 21:45

Oooooooooh. I didn't see that one coming.

Schuyler · 08/08/2019 22:01

Oh do you now? For weed...... Grin

VenusTiger · 08/08/2019 22:06

OP if the neighbour stinks of it, then they have it on their person.
Also, are you allowed to smoke in the flats?
And there are people campaigning for it to be made legal Confused

Sunflower20 · 08/08/2019 22:52

How is this neighbour vulnerable!? More like an antisocial tit. I really feel for you OP, weed smells vile and to be exposed to it regularly is really unfortunate. Maybe you can report it as suspected dealing so they can do something about it. Not on!!

TerracottaLeggy · 09/08/2019 02:35

Lol. Some of these comments are making me chortle.
