Child allowance cock up!!!!!

Rather large error on mine and my husbands part. When the new rule came in a few years ago about the £50.000 earnings and child benefit, we were fine as I wasn't working and his wage was about £48,000. Never gave it a second thought after that, and I've continued to have the payment for 2 children paid into my bank account every month. Unfortunately, my husband has had a couple of pay rises taking him over the £50k. I only work part time so my contribution is immaterial. Only just realised from a solicitor friends post on Facebook that we should have filled a self assessment form out and sent it to to the Tax office. My husband thought it would have been taken automatically out of his PAYE, but it's not . We have worked out we have probably been over paid by about £4K!!!! Up sh** creek without a paddle comes to mind. Has anyone else been in this position? How long can you pay it back over? We've not got any savings as our living costs are rubbish (and we're obviously useless!!) 😕

We went over last year ( wasn’t even aware of it) had to pay back over £800. Speak to tax office they’ll probably adjust your dh tax code to pay it back in instalments if you can’t afford a lump sum

Isn't it 50k (I thought it was 60k actually) AFTER tax and pension deductions? So if his salary is just over 50k you might be ok if his take home pay is less than that.

We're dealing with this at the moment as a bonus has put us over the threshold for the past year and for next year. You need to fill a form out online and then they send you something in the post to start the very convoluted way of paying it back. It's SO annoying. Surely they can automate it some way and send you a bill? We've been trying to sort it out for the past month! You might be in luck though if you deduct pension payments and it takes you under the allowance.

Oh God. I'm not sure. I'll have to check that. It's very confusing 😵 Thank you

This will help.

This happened to us. We paid it back over a year (their maximum time frame apparently but double check that Incase it's changed)
