5yr old with sore wrist

Yesterday 5 yr old DD tripped at soft play and fell onto her hands and knees. She cried and then wanted to go home but didn't seem actually injured. She was more quiet than usual all afternoon and I noticed that she was favouring her other hand more. There doesn't appear to be any swelling etc. She hadn't slept well the night before so difficult to know if she was just tired or in pain. I did give her some calpol before bed but that was the only time she said it was sore. Overnight I've kept an eye on her, she moves about in bed a lot but even though she's asleep when she turns over she's deliberately not putting weight on this wrist. She's just woken up and hasn't actually mentioned it but is using her non dominant hand instead.

I'm not sure what to do (and she's my third so you'd think I'd have it sussed by now)! We don't have a minor injuries unit so it's either a&e although it doesn't seem bad enough for that or the gp who can't see inside it. Of course I could just leave it and see how it goes but I'm not sure if I should do that as she's not really using it. Hmm what would you do?

Personally I would adopt a wait and see. A strain or bruise will take a day or so to go. If she complains a lot today or it gets worse then reassess.

Situations like this are difficult. You don’t want to have to sit in A&E for hours to be told it’s just still a bit sore from a fall but you also don’t want to risk leaving it in case she’s done something more.
I would ask her to try and give her fingers a wriggle and see what her movement is like. If its too painful for her to move the joint I would get her checked. Hope she’s ok.

I had similar..... I thought it was her wrist, turned out she had dislocated her elbow.

I definitely don't want to waste anyone's time in a&e but of course I don't want to miss an injury either. She won't let me near her hand today so I think I'm probably going to have to get her looked at. Thank you for your advice.

I would go and get it checked, my DD broke her wrist on 3 ( yes 3!) separate occasions in a 5 year period from fairly innocuous events, falling from monkey bars (not a great height), slipping over on the grass, and falling off her scooter. I doubted her each time (are you sure it really hurts that badly...?). She is now 20 and it is referred to as my “mother of the year” moments! Hope she’s okx

How is she OP?

bouncingraindrops · 08/08/2019 14:08

I would be concerned about a green stick fracture as it sounds like she landed on it in just the right way for one. I would take her to be checked tbh.

imaflutteringkite · 08/08/2019 14:20

We've been to a&e. They took xrays and it looks fine. They think she's pulled a ligament in her hand. They did say there was a small chance of a fracture that they can't see on the X-ray but they wouldn't treat that any differently anyway so it's all good news. Thank you for all the advice.

That's good news, how she is fully mended soon

Buddyelf · 08/08/2019 15:46

Good news! Glad she’s ok!

combatbarbie · 09/08/2019 13:53

How is she today? Did they actually check her arm not just her wrist.... I only ask because when DD dislocated her elbow she was holding her wrist and that's what we initially thought the problem was. Xray on wrist showed nothing but she was clearly still in pain so that's when they checked her elbow..... Very common in under 8s apparently

Is she back to normal today?

Mine would sit for hours in a&e complaining the injury still hurt and then the minute they were given the all clear and we went home the "injury" would miraculously disappear 😁
