Son was on his way to Broadmasters on a overnight coach. Took train up to Victoria Station got text saying he was there.. About 10 mins later he calls it had been tweeted it was cancelled. Lots of looking around very poorly placed on the website I had to search to find it..

Now trending on Twitter too.

I am collecting son at 1 am returning from train. He and the 3 girls he is with are in good spirits but disappointed.

My sister owns her own business and was due to be working there. Already travelled hundreds of miles to Cornwall with hundreds of pounds worth of stock in their van that will go to waste.
Its a huge blow to them financially.

I feel so bad for the local businesses. One had tweeted he had 14K's worth of food ready for this :(

I heard a lad being interviewed on the overnight coach from Victoria to Newquay who was trying to decide whether to get off at Cardiff. That would have been a bit of a detour.

That's such a shame it's a really great festival. Will your DS and friends get refunds?

Hoghgyni · 07/08/2019 08:38

Ticket holders should get a full refund, if they had bought through official sites. I imagine it will be harder if you bought through Viagogo or an unofficial reseller.

It's going to have a huge knock on effect on the local community & traders, with a lot of last minute room cancellations. The surf festival is still going ahead, but they couldn't risk the sound & light rigs on top of a cliff. Boardmasters itselfbis going to take a huge financial hit.

My kids were there a few years ago when a storm hit on the Saturday and one of the stages blew over. Its on a cliff top so despite very impressive ways to hold the tents and stages down, when the wind blows in from the sea, there's nothing to stop it! And it's forecast very very strong winds and torrential rain so risk of electrocution too!

Very sad for the community and thousands who were going - I always loved being in Newquay when Boardmasters was on - never went to the festival but was fascinated being there during the preceding week and watching all the tents and stages being erected. Smile

Fair play to them though for thinking of the attendees safety, Boardmasters should have event insurance so probably won't be ridiculously out of pocket. It is a shame for the traders hopefully there is a way they can minimise losses, and for those who have travelled all that way.

Just saw I have stuck a random R into the title :) Boardmasters obviously.

DS and friends all bought through official site so they will get their ticket money back. They wont get their travel money back DS is pretty ok about it though.

BM have finally updated their website so it is on the front page & BBC added it under UK news 18 minutes ago.

I don't have a issue with them cancelling however the way they went about it was appalling. People asking " is this for real? Have you been hacked?" That should not have happened. Nor should you need to search on the website for the cancellation. Like we did last night. However safety wise yes I think they did the right thing.

Has anyone had experience of this happening? What happens about the ticket refund?

GettickledGETTICKLEDbyspiders · 07/08/2019 09:03

My husband thinks they may go bust because if it and not give back the money. I am hoping he’s wrong.

Enko · 07/08/2019 09:04

@GettickledGETTICKLEDbyspiders In 2014 when they cancelled the tickets price were refunded. One would assume they will do the same this time. However travel obviously wont be unless you have travel insurance.

Boardmasters themselves should have insurance to ensure they can afford to cope with this. I am more concerned about local businesses who may not have.

DS just came in and said he received an email at 8 42 am.. AKA 42 mins AFTER the gates should have opened, to tell him it was cancelled.

Thanks for the information, hopefully we will be refunded for the tickets soon.

It was my dd 18th birthday present ☹️

Sandybval · 07/08/2019 10:14

@Enko it is horrible for them, but if something had happened due to the weather had it gone ahead, its unlikely that the festival would continue in future years which would cause more losses. Hopefully people booked into accomodation will stay and make the most of a short break, it's the high winds and temporary structures that are the issue. I've been a few times (although not for a good few years) and due to the location bad weather is not acceptable.

Sandybval · 07/08/2019 10:14

The way they handled it seems poor though.

Enko · 07/08/2019 12:15

@Sandybval I agree like I said on other thread. The decision is the Right one. Then handling of it utterly appallingly.
Metrobhs however have been amazing. Offering to return earlier and have put on more seats.
