Can anyone recommend a semi-permanent, bright, purple dye that won't fade to blue?

We used a Crazy Colours hot purple dye on the (pre-lightened) ends of dd1's hair at the beginning of last week & it's very slowly fading out to a pretty turquoise colour.

We might try and make it purple again, or might leave it alone but, should she ever fancy purple hair again, can someone recommend a dye that won't fade to blue?

Tia :)

I’ve used that colour - looks great at first and fades to quite a nice blue. I think red is quite an unstable colour which may be why the red bit of the purple fades.

I usually add ‘Fire’ or a bit of ‘cyclamen’ for more red.

I used to dye my own hair red, many years ago, and it always faded quickly so I didn't expect it to last forever...just a bit longer than 3 washes or so since she doesn't wash it every night.

We're heading through town tomorrow so might nip and have a look for either of those to add a little bit next time, thanks @Girlwithkaleidoscopehair.

Out of interest, have you ever tried to turn the blue back to hot purple? If so...how successful (or not!) was it?

Manic panic dyes are good, back when I did fun hair colours I used to put some of the dye into a bottle of conditioner and used it every wash to top up the colour.

Best dye by far - are the La Directions Riche colours

MrsDaveGrohl78 · 06/08/2019 22:53

As above, another vote for Directions... brilliant!

Plum is great because it has a warm base tone rather than a cooler blue base

Another vote for directions 😊 also inflashy is getting good reviews atm

Special Effects (SFX) Pimpin' Purple is a strong, deep purple which - in my experience - eventually fades to a pink-toned lilac. It's by far the best brand I've used for unnatural coloured hair dye.

Another vote for directions! I've done several of the colours and am currently sporting pillarbox red which layered over my blue/green stained hair has come out a beautiful red/purple ombre.

Oh, I went to bed & didn't think to check back this morning We're through town now but we'll have a look at the Directions and SFX ones online when we get home and maybe try one of those instead.

Has anyone ever tried to go back to purple from the faded blue colour? She was keen to have purple for Pride next weekend :)

Because dyes like SFX and Directions are just staining the hair, it's very easy to go back to purple from the faded blue colour!

lucysmam · 07/08/2019 11:29

Oh! Well, I didn't know that. Dd1 will be very happy when I tell her Grin

I'd just whack on purple on top of a faded blue

lucysmam · 07/08/2019 18:28

@NotSoThinLizzy excellent NN Grin. That's what we're going to do. 20 years ago, and on my own hair, I wouldn't even have thought about it but now it's dd's hair I'm not so sure

😂 I know what you mean I used pink dye on DDs hair all over thinking itll be pale I forgot to mix it with conditioner and she had florescent pink hair for weeks. Shes naturally white blonde. Now I only do the ends.
