Is this amount of destruction normal? New windows

I ordered some new windows to replace our very old sash ones from a local company. I had the windows replaced in our old house and the guys came round, popped all the old ones out and replaced with barely any mess. I think there were a few scuffs on the walls and a tiny bit of repainting here and there that we needed to do but otherwise it was mess free.

Today they were supposed to be replacing some doors. They’ve absolutely hacked the old ones out. The one that they’ve actually replaced so far is sitting in the frame surrounded by completely chipped away walls, it’s horrendous. It will need to be completely replastered and I just can’t see how they’re going to be able to tidy it up to make it look acceptable. I didn’t see it until I got home this evening and the guys had already left for the day. They’re coming back tomorrow but I can’t get over how awful it is.

Has anyone else had this and then the gutters have somehow fixed it? Was I just ridiculously lucky last time with how little damage there was?

Photo? Is there an office you can call or is it a one man business?

DoesThisLookRight · 06/08/2019 22:12

Is the photo attaching?

That's awful!!

I would make a point of raising it with them the minute they arrive tomorrow - 'obviously you're not going to leave it like that so I was wondering what the repair process you use is'

DoesThisLookRight · 06/08/2019 22:12

It’s not a one man business but it’s not a big national one. They do have an office but it was shut by the time I saw it.

What do the terms of your contract with them say re repairs?

theunrivalledjoysofparenting · 06/08/2019 22:15

Bloody hell, that looks awful! Why did they do that?

We had two patio doors and a back door replaced last year. They just popped them all out and the new one in. No problems. No broken plaster, no repainting necessary. Ring the company tomorrow, tell them what’s happened, or talk to the fitters when they arrive.

Struggling to see how they can repair this...

HeadintheiClouds · 06/08/2019 22:18

Jesus, that’s complete vandalism! Shock. Don’t pay a penny until they’ve made good the damage.

HappyHammy · 06/08/2019 22:19

I've never seen anything quite like that!! is that the new door, ours was replaced, they just sort of slid it out and put a new one in, no painting, no holes, no gaps, just a bit of filler stuff around the edges. I would actually send that to the head office, ask for the manager to come round before any more work starts, that isn't even in properly and is surely a security risk. what's with all that disgusting foam filler at the bottom? I would not pay a penny for that, would expect full compensation, the cost to repair the walls and decoration and would consider discussing this with the consumers association. that's bloody appalling.

HappyHammy · 06/08/2019 22:22

Shame them on social media and I would consider contacting the police about criminal damage, is that scaffolding outside? have you got any pictures of the door area before they hacked it to death.

PickAChew · 06/08/2019 22:26

How is that frame even properly attached? You can see daylight around it. Even if the interior wall was re-plastered, the plaster will just get damp.

DoesThisLookRight · 06/08/2019 22:34

They’re definitely not finished with it yet as they’re coming back tomorrow. I just don’t see how they can make it better and don’t understand why they needed to bash bits off in the first place.

We don’t actually live in the house yet as it’s being done up at the moment. Also not too much of a security risk as it’s on the first floor onto a balcony. The scaffolding is unrelated to the new door.

There doesn’t seem to be anything in the contract about repairs or damage. The only paperwork I can find just says about the payment terms. There may be something else though but dh would have it and he’s away atm. I could cry.

how awful for you, I can't see how they can remedy it either, would it be worth contacting your insurance people just for some advice.

FrangipaniBlue · 06/08/2019 22:38

DH does this for a living (qualified joiner but does UPVC too). I just showed him the picture and he said WTF??

Even he couldn't fathom how they've done so much damage, he's saying it needs cut out tidier (square) and re-lined with new plaster board before it's all skimmed back in again but he said make sure they cover the cost of a joiner and plasterer to sort it!

DoesThisLookRight · 06/08/2019 22:40

Thanks frangi that’s really helpful. I’ll make sure to ask them to do that.

Is this a Juliette balcony that was in place when the house was built, or added in later? If the latter, I'm actually wondering if a pigs ear was made of cutting the brick, at the time, hence the wooden batten, which for some reason is only coming partway down the side of the opening. I don't get why they didn't fix the batten before installing the doors because it's not exactly something you can slot in, afterwards.

What does it look like from the outside?

DoesThisLookRight · 07/08/2019 06:57

pickachew no, the balcony is an original feature. I haven’t looked st it from the outside yet. I was scared to open to door in case the whole thing fell out.

How did you get my on today @DoesThisLookRight ?

Masketti · 07/08/2019 21:32

That is definitely wrong! We had all doors and windows replaced and yes we needed to repaint around the new windows but no plastering or massive hole filling! That's butchering!

DoesThisLookRight · 07/08/2019 22:31

This is it today. I spoke to the office and apparently the timber around the previous door was all rotted and fell out when they removed the door. Office said that it would all be sorted today. It certainly looks better but I’m concerned they’ve just covered it with cladding and there’s not anything underneath it. My builder friend is coming to have a look at it this weekend. It’s annoying as I can’t be there during the day to speak to the fitters. The only person I can speak to in the office on the phone is a receptionist person who doesn’t know anything about the fitting itself.

It certainly looks better, hopefully it's solid enough when your friend checks!

You'd think they might have given you the heads up though rather than just leave it for you to find like it was Hmm

DoesThisLookRight · 07/08/2019 22:46

That’s what concerns me. I don’t actually live there yet so I think they were hoping I wouldn’t have gone round last night to check.
