Hi

im looking to supplement my self-employed income and would love to get advice from those who work "bank" hours.

I could work any days / over nights

How many hours a week do you usually work ? do you get as many as you would like ?

pros and cons ?

thanks

I work as bank staff for a nursery (all year not term time) - as it's holiday season there are more hours needing to be covered so I'm doing approx 24 hours per week. It is flexible as I can say which days/sessions I cannot work so I can still keep up with my self employed work.

Our trust does bank admin as well as all other grades

StillMedusa · 06/08/2019 15:20

I work supply TA in school. Gives me flexibility!

thanks for the replies !

didn't think about bank admin , that would really suit me. I shall check if my trust does that.

Have you considered driving for your Out of Hours GP service. Ours offer bank work.

kitty4paws · 06/08/2019 23:59

I did not even know that was a "thing" , thanks

Exam invigilator - I have seen lots of jobs in colleges and schools. But it's only for a short period of time.

Electoral services canvassing - involves delivering forms door to door and then chasing up uncompleted forms.

There are always adverts for bank lecturing staff at FE colleges around here.

confusedofengland · 07/08/2019 09:04

I do this for libraries. There are a pool of us assigned to cover about 15 libraries in the local area. We can be asked to work at any time with any amount of notice but can say no - I often do due to childcare etc & it does not affect me being asked again. Pay is not great though (just above nmw). I tend to work between 4-24 hours per week!

Lecturing !!! I've a pgce in higher education, didn't even think of that

I’ve just taken a bank job in admin.

FrangipaniBlue · 07/08/2019 13:01

NHS bodies usually have bank staff to cover admin roles, I know my local one does

HypatiaCade · 07/08/2019 13:15

Children's nurseries do this, I looked at one and they said they have a bank of staff to fill vacancies rather than using temp agencies.

kitty4paws · 07/08/2019 14:12

For nurseries I presume I would need a childcare qualification?

Probably just a clean DBS, really, and some experience with children. Contact some local ones and ask what they do for temp staff, and whether they have bank staff and what they require of them.

Same with creches at gyms, and the hours there are likely even shorter.

kitty4paws · 07/08/2019 15:58

Thanks for all the info,it's very helpful

I'm a retired medical secretary and I'm on the bank for a local mental health trust. I get sent all over the county to different community mental health centres and hospital units, mostly covering sick leave, some long term.

Gingernaut · 07/08/2019 16:28

I'm on an admin bank for a hospital.

Advertised jobs are few and far between and there is certainly no guarantee of permanent work.

I’m a bank support worker in a couple of hostels for homeless vulnerable 16-25 yr olds. It’s great fun, you get all the training (which is paid and interesting) and I’m on about 21 hours a week. Shifts can be sleep overs in one of the places so you’re not paid hourly rate from midnight to 8, but get a fixed amount. It works for me now the kids are older.
