Bananas! My nemesis

WhoLurvesOrangeSoda · 05/08/2019 21:54

I love bananas. But I haven't eaten one in over a year as they give me crippling stomach cramps.
I am craving a banana. Which is why I'm thinking about them.

Does anyone else get this? What could it mean? Am I intolerant? Allergic?
Should I risk eating one and see if the pain has disappeared?

And when I say stomach cramps, I mean, debilitating cramps. Hours long, needing a hot water bottle and numerous pain killers to make it subside.

This only started a few years ago... as far as I remember I ate them throughout my childhood with no problem 🤔

They give me an instant migraine. I crave bananas and custard Sad

CrumbsThatsQuick · 05/08/2019 22:02

I have exactly the same. Could eat them as a child... can't anymore, since about 5 years ago.... never got to the bottom of it!

WhoLurvesOrangeSoda · 05/08/2019 22:02

I hear you @CrocodilesCry majorly craving a banana right now. Custard with it would be amazing!!

@CrumbsThatsQuick I wonder what it could be?? 🤔

Do they still give you cramps if you cook them? Would it be worth baking one and just eating a little of it to test the effect?

Pascha · 05/08/2019 22:13

Me too Sad. I used to love a banana sandwich. Haven't been able to digest one for fifteen years. They put me on the floor in pain.

WhoLurvesOrangeSoda · 05/08/2019 22:23

@Pascha banana sandwiches!! My mum used to make them for me when I was young! Loved them.

@AdaColeman I'm not sure about them when cooked 🤔 I did have a banana muffin not so long ago and I didn't have any adverse reaction to it. I assume it contained real banana 🤷‍♀️
If that's the case, I wonder what it is about raw bananas that does not agree with me?

I've recently been diagnosed coeliac... I wonder if there is any connection? Though obviously I know bananas do not contain gluten 😂

@Pascha and I agree, it's real on the floor pain. Nothing else makes me feel like that, it's just awful

OP posts:
Pascha · 05/08/2019 22:29

It's the worst and I never even try a little bit because I'm so scared of the pain.

I used to eat two or three at a time...

CrumbsThatsQuick · 05/08/2019 22:36

Cooked bananas are fine for me.

CrocodilesCry · 05/08/2019 22:50

I got a migraine after touching one last year so I can't risk cooking one even Shock

butterry · 05/08/2019 22:57

I have this too, it’s an intolerance as I used to eat them all the time. I get debilitating cramps and diarrhoea almost immediately. Now I can only eat them cooked/baked. I think I remember looking into it and it was related to ragweed and latex allergies as well.

whingeygingy · 05/08/2019 23:24

Sprinkle banana with rum and Demerara sugar. Wrap in cooking foil and put in oven till soft😏

pinkstar01 · 05/08/2019 23:24

Yes!! Me!! I thought I was a freak of nature!
I used to be able to eat them just fine when I was younger but about 10/15 years ago I realized they would make me get cramps/gas and just feel awful so now I don't eat them.

However I can eat them if they've been cooked in let's say banana bread!

whingeygingy · 05/08/2019 23:25

I meant 😏😋😋

herbsmokedchicken · 05/08/2019 23:33

I feel your pain - I’m fine with bananas but have developed a kiwi allergy! I’m gutted as I bloody love kiwis. It’s currently very mild but apparently can be quite dangerous and also lead to developing allergies to things like banana, peppers, potatoes, so I’m not risking it! Being allergic to kiwis is bad enough, I can’t lose bananas and potatoes!

OldAndWornOut · 05/08/2019 23:33

I think they give out some sort of gas? Something like that anyway; that's why they make other fruit over ripe if you keep them too close to your bananas.

No idea if its true or not, but someone told me that.
They give me terrible indigestion!

WhoLurvesOrangeSoda · 06/08/2019 00:24

@herbsmokedchicken how strange! My sister has the same reaction with kiwis! She's fine with bananas though. I couldn't live without potatoes, it's not worth the risk

Glad I'm not the only one with banana fear...I wonder if there's some way of overcoming it.. I really want a banana. Not right now though, it's far too late at night.

I love bananas but they give me hideous heartburn and often stomach pains. If I put one on my cereal it literally comes straight through me. Fine when cooked though!

Jacksback · 06/08/2019 06:33

Wow and I thought it was just me
I never ever have them now as the pain feels like I need to go to a and e ( but I don’t obviously )
Makes me double over with pain and I avoid in everything , as they are , uncooked ,or in smoothies , milk shakes or cakes pudding . It is just not worth it .

AJPTaylor · 06/08/2019 06:48

It's surprising isn't it? In my 30s I developed an intolerance to all forms of citrus. Yet had eaten fruit all my life.
Now can only do apples and pears

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/08/2019 06:55

My people! I used to eat a banana a say in my lunch. But since having dd1 19 years ago, I can't eat them without a stomach ache afterwards.

A bit like eggs. I can eat eggs, and have no problem with anything cooked with whole egg I them, but if I eat scrambled, poached fried or boiled then I feel really sick afterwards. Just the yolk is fine, but I can't eat the white.

WhoLurvesOrangeSoda · 06/08/2019 09:30

Definitely not just me then!
I'd love to know why we suddenly become intolerant to something?

Is there anyone scientific out there who can explain this to me?
