CBA to be changed, I've had a horrible year. I turn forty soon and in a but to drag myself out of depression,am writing a list of 50 things to achieve (or give a bloody good go at!), The year i turn forty.

In no particular order:

  1. Ride 100
  2. Run a marathon
  3. Go to Vegas

(NB these are big ones! Want lots of smaller too)

Please help me write my get happy, get forty list

IndianaMoleWoman · 05/08/2019 20:56

Pick an author and read all their work.

IndianaMoleWoman · 05/08/2019 20:57

Grow some veg and cook a meal with it.

LuckyLou7 · 05/08/2019 21:00

What about some less adventurous things for the winter months, like to learn to crochet, join a choir, work your way through the top ten books to read before you die (on Goodreads), learn to kickbox, dance the tango, play the piano.

What a great idea. I always wanted to learn to bake bread 🍞but it's still on my to do list. Think of what makes you happy. You don't want to have make lots of chutney if you will never eat it 🌶

BarbaraofSeville · 05/08/2019 21:19

Learn to scuba dive. That's what I did the year I turned 40 and it's probably the best thing I ever did.

Climb a mountain.

Get a tattoo, assuming you don't already have any.

Have a tasting menu or do something like buy a really expensive bottle of wine (£40! from a wine merchant) and just enjoy sharing it with your partner or a friend.

ScreamingValenta · 05/08/2019 21:22

Go on a weekend retreat.

Learn to ride a horse
Donate blood
Go on a organised night bike ride

BarbaraofSeville · 06/08/2019 06:44

YY to night riding - I've done night mountain biking in the woods, you need really good lights but many bike shops do organised rides for all levels and it's really liberating riding through the woods at night.

You can do team events (or solo/pairs!) where you ride for 24 hours between you - they make a great weekend.

Maybe also some sort of 'tough mudder' event, open water swimming or triathlon?

Holiday somewhere completely different to what you normally do, so camper van round a remote area of the UK - if you haven't been round the Scottish Highlands and Islands before, the remoteness is mindblowing.

At a more down to earth/achievable level considering that a lot of the things on the list might take all your annual leave and/or money, invent a signature cocktail and make a big jug to share with friends.

BusterGonad · 06/08/2019 06:47

Are you sure this is a good idea Op? If you don't achieve them will it not make you feel a bit shit? I'd say start with small steps and build yourself up each year!

Kalim8 · 06/08/2019 07:20

Start learning a new language
Go on a mini cruise
Go through all paperwork and only keep what's up to date (maybe just me - bank statements from 2013,anyone?)

LizziesTwin · 06/08/2019 07:22

Do the Elvis Marathon in Vegas, it’s in December I think and combine the two.

QuinoaWest · 06/08/2019 07:55

Regularly leave 'random act of kindness' notes of encouragement in public places (maybe even just a couple weekly? Thus no added pressure on yourself).

Sounds so insignificant, but it once made a really terrible, upsetting week bearable, and raised a smile, to find a handwritten anonymous post-it note taped on the inside of a bus stop shelter saying:

"Oy, YOU ...yes, I mean YOU ...you're flippin' awesome!
Remember that on a bad day"
Smile

Tucked inside books/ inside loo cubicles/ on park benches etc. etc. could be good.

QuinoaWest · 06/08/2019 08:01

PS
Really hope your depression improves. It's shit. No other word.
Sounds like you've been through the mill.
Maybe a good autumn's right around the corner to compensate a little.

PixieLumos · 06/08/2019 08:04

Paint a portrait of someone - could be a celebrity, your family member, yourself...

FusionChefGeoff · 06/08/2019 08:05

That's an amazing list!!

But be careful about setting yourself up to fail as some of that is a huge time investment just for 1 thing - maybe aim to do them in the first half is your forties???? Running a marathon for example pretty much takes over all your spare time for 6 months training / eating / stretching / yoga / foam rolling / running.

Theworldcouldbemymollusc · 06/08/2019 08:06

I'm scooping up ideas for when I'm fifty!!!

HeyHeyMckenzie · 06/08/2019 09:04

Love the random notes of kindness idea! Good work QuinoaWest

Hecateh · 06/08/2019 09:59

If you are not generally arty - do a paint by numbers. I remember them as a child and they were crap but the newer ones have about 40 different colours and I am amazed that the one I did look brilliant quite good from a distance

Vesperia · 06/08/2019 10:06

master some yoga poses

LifeIsGoodish · 06/08/2019 10:17

Make something and wear it regularly. Could be anything from a simple pin right up to complex dressmaking.

Teach someone to do something that you can do.

Talk to a stranger.

Do a random act of kindness.

Give blood.

Swim in Wastwater (England's deepest, coldest and cleanest lake)

Meditate on a beach at dawn (doesn't have to be anywhere exotic!)

Sing in public.

Sing solo in public.

Go bat-watching.

Handle a bird of prey.
