Cheese (foodies please enlighten me)

So, every week I buy a pack of mild cheddar to grate into sandwiches for the work week ahead. Never anything different, always mild cheddar (because this is what my Mum used to buy). I don't like goats or sheeps cheese (too stinky and strong smelling for me), but what else could I try? I need inspiration!

Emmental with pastrami, gherkins and mustard mayo is the best sandwich in the world, and it's not a pungent cheese.

Or Brie with cranberry sauce or grapes?

Edam with a fruity chutney...I love cheese Grin

Soola · 04/08/2019 17:29

Red Leicester?

Edam?

Medium cheddar?

Mature Cheddar?

Personally I love Cornish cruncher.

BelleSausage · 04/08/2019 17:30

Burrata.

It is God’s cheese.

Caerphilly: a little bit crumbly, a bit salty, pale and delicious.

Scotinoz · 04/08/2019 17:35

Oooo!

A nice mature cheddar?

Lancashire or Wensleydale? They're mild and crumbly and yum.

Brie? French or English. Camembert? Delicious and again mild.

Feta? Halloumi? Satisfyingly salty.

Doux du montange? Current favourite.

Mozzarella or Burratta. Mild but I could eat a whole ball.

Depends what you want it for I guess? Sandwiches or just cheesy pleasure?

Grumpbum123 · 04/08/2019 17:36

Sliced havarati mild and creamy

Sexnotgender · 04/08/2019 17:36

A mature Gouda.

missmouse101 · 04/08/2019 17:38

Red Leicester? Yum!

HalfBloodPrincess · 04/08/2019 17:40

My favourite is Lincolnshire poacher - lovely and nutty.
Some other faves:
Snowdonia black bomber.
Y Fenni
Smoked goats cheese

AuntieMarys · 04/08/2019 17:40

I love cheese.
Great recommendations above...Burrata is gorgeous and Wensleydale.
Booths do a lovely creamy Alpine cheese
Nettle cheese is very tasty.

Grumpbum123 · 04/08/2019 17:47

Oh and yarg

nocoolnamesleft · 04/08/2019 17:50

Nice bit of Wensleydale?

Jsmith99 · 04/08/2019 17:56

Mature cheddar is the obvious place to start. It has much more flavour than the mild stuff.

Brie has a completely different texture to cheddar, so is worth a try.

Gruyère is delicious, as is Yarg.

EskewedBeef · 04/08/2019 17:57

Mild cheddar is basically unflavoured cheese, so definitely start going up in strength on that. Any of the crumbly British cheeses will make a nice, salty change for you. Red Leicester and Double Gloucester are mild but different enough from Cheddar and have their own taste.

Don't even bother with goat's cheese. If you don't like the smell, the taste will horrify you.

SeaRabbit · 04/08/2019 18:20

Comté, Gruyère, mature Gouda, all gorgeous, and like cheddar, but so much more flavour and character.

My mum used to grate Wensleydale or Cheshire finely then mix with a bit of milk as a sandwich filling and that is nice, M&S add a bit of celery, which is an excellent idea.

lljkk · 04/08/2019 18:33

Do you still want to grate it into sandwiches? Do you want to try cheese in other ways?

viques · 04/08/2019 18:44

Lots of lovely cheese ideas here. Any chance you have a good cheese shop , farm shop or deli near you? Tasting different cheeses before you buy is a revelation. There are lots of small producers these days and the range of cheeses they make is amazing.

If you are near London then the Neal street cheese shop at Covent Garden and borough market is good, there is a good cheese shop near Marylebone high street, and my current favourite is the artisan cheese maker whose name I have forgotten but does their stuff in Tottenham.

Just don't go to the dark side and try the blue stuff ( the devil spits on it you know).

JingsMahBucket · 04/08/2019 19:04

A Manchego may be a nice transition because it’s still not a sharp cheese yet is flavorful.

lastqueenofscotland · 04/08/2019 19:13

Manchego
Lancashire

lastqueenofscotland · 04/08/2019 19:13

Ooo Lincolnshire poacher too

Devaki · 04/08/2019 19:17

Mild is crap. It doesn't taste of anything! I love a good mature/ vintage cheddar. Sometimes leerdammer , feta crumbled on a salad , Lancashire crumbly.
.

nocoolnamesleft · 04/08/2019 19:26

Possibly better a creamy Lancashire than a crumbly Lancashire to start with...

Jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 04/08/2019 19:31

Lidl do the most amazing Welsh extra mature cheddar.

I buy the big blocks £3.99 for 850g. They do smaller 350g for £1.75
