Any Bewdley / Kidderminster folks here?

We are coming to the Bridgnorth area on holiday in a couple of weeks and I'm just wondering if there are any hidden gems that we should visit whilst we're there. I have 2 ds's who are 12 & 16 and we have transport so are happy to travel around. Would love some inside knowledge about the area, please!

Kinver rock houses (national trust)are fun then a walk/ explore round Kinver edge and the other caves in the woods. Bewdley is lovely for s wonder, perhaps walk along the river, fish and chips next to the river, nice little free museum. There’s a go ape nearish to there. Blists hill museum and iron bridge and engenuity museums (plus a couple more - I think you can get a pass to do the lot) up at Telford would be great for older children. Some other decent NationalTrust places about. Will try to think of more and post!

Safari Park, Dudley zoo and Castle, bliss Hill or Black Country museum, ironbridge

Great thanks. I heard of some sort of Cold War bunker that you can visit in that area but I can't find any details anywhere. Does that ring any bells with anyone?

Severn Valley steam railway is fab. Stop off at Arley for an ice cream by the river. Really pretty and idyllic.

KittyBaxter · 04/08/2019 20:58

Witley Court is an old ruined stately home, great for mildly spooky exploration.

Widdendream77 · 05/08/2019 13:24

There’s the secret bunker in Nantwich but that’s a very long drive away?

Frith2013 · 05/08/2019 13:55

Lots of National Trust locally.
Severn Valley Railway plus free museum in Kidder. Engine house at Highley.
Bewdley Museum
Wyre Forest with Go Ape
Shelsley Hill Climb (motor racing)
Bridgnorth - cliff railway
Ironbridge museums
Cinema - Kidder or lovely little cinema in Tenbury

Frith2013 · 05/08/2019 13:56

Nantwich is 150 miles away.

There’s a ROC bunker at Broadway Tower.

Frith2013 · 05/08/2019 13:58

Can also hire bikes now in the Wyre Forest (near Go Ape).
Worcester good for the cathedral, walks, countryside centre etc. About 20 miles from Bewdley.
I prefer Hereford though!
Acton Scott is a working farm museum near Church Stretton (used for filming the Victorian Farm)

Frith2013 · 05/08/2019 14:03

National Trust:

Berrington Hall (near Leominster). Big grounds, sometimes offer rowing on the lake. Walled garden, stately home.

Is just a couple of miles from...

Croft Castle. Victorian (?) but very old church.

Dudmaston - between Bridgnorth and Kidder. Big grounds with walks. Bizarrely, not open on Saturdays!

Kinver Rock Houses - as mentioned by pp. You could also pop to Wolverhampton airport whilst there which is basically grass with little planes landing and a coffee shop!

Thanks everyone. These are really helpful. The bunker is heard about was in Kidderminster area I think. Maybe I've got it wrong. Or it is a very well kept secret bunker Grin

I think you mean the Hack Green Nuclear Bunker. It's now converted to a museum. It's at Whitchurch which is about an hour and a half from Kidderminster, about an hour from Bridgnorth.

If you like a pool with slides, waves, sprays etc then Crystal Leisure Centre at Stourbridge isn't too far away.

Ironbridge is good for a day out - avaoid a Sunday afternoon as it is completely full with tourists at this time of year. As someone mentioned, there is a pass to get in all of the museums that lets you go in each one and lasts a year. Otherwise, Blists Hill in Telford is lovely, full of character. Love the old sweet shop and the old fairground rides. It's set up like a working town, with a bank, and shops etc.

Black Country Museum is in Dudley. Similar, and I love it there too. Same thing - little shops, good fish & chip shop etc. Your tickets allows you a return visit too.

Personally I wouldn't do Dudley Zoo, it's hilly and over rated. If you want to see animals, do the West Midland Safari Park in Kidderminster. You need the best part of a day to do the safari and all the rides.

There are lots of little historic places in Shropshire to see - I know most of them because of school trips in the past. Just need an hour of so at each of them.

Wroxeter Roman City is nice as you can visit the reconstructed house and the remains of the bath house. A bit like an English Pompeii.

Of towns to visit, if I only did a couple I would do Ironbridge (standing by that historic bridge is great) and Shrewsbury - it has lots of listed buildings and churches (The Abbey is where the Brother Carfael series was set and filmed)

Much Wenlock is a cute little town for a look around as well.

I think drake low tunnels is the bunker you are thinking of

Frith2013 · 05/08/2019 14:24

Drakelow was used for growing cannabis and is not open to the public.

Frith2013 · 05/08/2019 14:26

I stand corrected - drakelow is now open occasionally! The last time I went was c 1997.

doleritedinosaur · 05/08/2019 14:27

Worcester is a good day out & the museum has a toy exhibition on currently.

Bridgenorth has a steam railway.

If your DC love books Hay on Wye is fantastic.

Frith2013 · 05/08/2019 15:07

Ludlow also excellent. Castle, shops, various tea rooms. If you walk down the lane past the castle, you can paddle in the river.

Top of Clee Hill (follow signs for Dhustone, off the main road) is a deserted quarry, fantastic views and somewhere to park to eat fish and chips.

StormyLovesOdd · 05/08/2019 15:18

Bridgenorth is lovely and the Black Country Museum. If it's raining and you fancy some retail therapy the Bullring in Birmingham is great. There's also Think Tank at Millennium Point in Birmingham which is also good for a rainy day. You can catch the train from Kidderminster into Birmingham or you could drive though parking is expensive.

ThanksItHasPockets · 05/08/2019 15:20

Avoncroft is mad but quite good fun if you and the DC are interested in history. Lots of rescued historical buildings which have been reconstructed. Open air so weather dependent.

merlinder · 05/08/2019 15:29

Ooh this is great, thanks!

I think the drake place rings a bell. Pity it's not always open.
