A&E Staff/Doctors - Do Sprains look this bad? Should I get a second opinion?

Hi
I went over on my ankle on Thursday and of course, went to A&E (once I'd been helped up & driven there). Was in & out very quickly. X-ray apparently didn't show a break so I was given a leaflet on Sprained Ankles, wheeled up to Physio to be given Crutches (which I couldn't use as it was too painful to even brush the floor with my foot and I don't have the strength to use crutches with one leg). Had to slide into house on my bum and that night was completely immobile.
Yesterday morning I woke up able to limp with my ankle in an old boot brace I had from a previous break. Today I can touch the ground without the boot brace but not really weight bare. When my foot touches the ground I can feel what seems to be bones 'moving' in my ankle.
Anyway, have had a good look at my ankle this morning and it looks horrific! I get that there'll always be bruising & swelling but even when I broke my ankle, it didn't look this bad?
Should I go back to A&E or is this standard for a bad Sprain?

Thanks

@HappyLoneParentDay
Can’t your mum come and help?

Can you move your toes? If not, another indication of that being a break. Blood bruising usually means a break. Go back and demand second X-ray and opinion!
Good luck, it looks really painful 😖

I have two foot braces from bunion surgery. I was told to keep them in case I ever hurt my foot again! There aren't even charities that can take them because of the padding. I am tempted to wear them one Halloween though!

notsodimwit · 04/08/2019 14:31

Oh op! That looks so so sore! Your poor ankle and footShock I would go back to hospital with that xxFlowers

LollipopViolet · 04/08/2019 14:31

Glad you went back OP, that looks so painful.
Hope the wait isn't too long and you're sorted soon Flowers

museumum · 04/08/2019 14:32

It looks bad. But it could still be a sprain. I had one that required months of physio. Best to get in the system and in the waiting list now.

namechangedforthis1980 · 04/08/2019 14:32

Ouch!! Glad you're having it checked again, fingers crossed it's not broken Shock

Violetroselily · 04/08/2019 14:35

Oof that's made me clench Shock

Hope you're on the mend soon

This was my sprain. Fell 3 inches off a curb. Was on crutches for 3 weeks and off work for a month (physical job). The swelling still has fully gone down 6 months later. The A&E doc said sprains can hurt as much as break - I believe him! Sorry OP hope you are better soon Thanks

originalusernamefail · 04/08/2019 14:37

P.S those pics don't show all the bruising as they were taken 1hr after. At its worst it spread from my toes to mid - shin.

notsodimwit · 04/08/2019 14:38

Also for you 🍰

Hotterthanahotthing · 04/08/2019 14:42

I have had acouple of sprains that looked worse than that.An orthopaedic Dr got the to do another x-ray as he couldn't believe it wasn't broken.
This didn't mean it was less painful,I wasn't given any crutches but luckily not alone.
I spent a long time with it elevated and defrosted a lot of veg getting the swelling down and munching ibuprofen.
So lots of sympathy , it's so painful and takes weeks to heal.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 04/08/2019 14:51

I had identical bruising to that when I sprained my ankle - I stepped out of a portaloo on to a moss covered pothole. Went to hospital the next day where an x ray ruled out a break.

I’m eternally grateful I didn’t do it as I was stepping in to the portaloo.

allymcn · 04/08/2019 14:53

My DP went over on his ankle and done one of the ligaments in, to be honest his bruising was worse and up his shins and calf too. It's looks worse than it probably is. Take care!

Angrybottlethrower · 04/08/2019 14:56

Oh my goodness OP that looks so painful! I’ve never seen a sprain look like that

allymcn · 04/08/2019 14:57

@Orchardgreen no doctor would give out that advice. I'm sitting beside one who says in no uncertain terms - you're talking absolute shite 😂

Knowivedonewrong · 04/08/2019 15:03

I did my ankle in last summer.
It wasn't broken but very bad bruising going up my leg.
If you're still worried then go back and get another xray.

catflapuk · 04/08/2019 15:09

Yes, it is possible. Mine looked like that - A&E said a small fracture but the main pain would come from the muscels, tissue etc. They gave me crutches and off I went. The consultant was talking about giving me a walking boot because it was a really bad sprain, but stupidly I declined.

Keep resting but also... keep moving... try to walk...even if it hurts like hell. After about 8 weeks I got rid of the crutches, but it took many more months to heal and not be in pain. More than six months in total.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 04/08/2019 15:30

Hope your okay x

SinkGirl · 04/08/2019 15:38

Hope you’re okay. I had one that looked just like this a few years ago and I actually felt something break when I landed on it. But it wasn’t broken - the hospital said it was ligament damage. I’ve fractured my other ankle previously and it was nowhere near as painful as this!

MakeLemonade · 04/08/2019 15:44

Gosh wasn’t being passive aggressive at all, you said you fell in mud that you’d not been able to wash it off and it looks quite brown in the photo (I’m on my phone, it’s quite small) so couldn’t tell if bruising or not. No need to be so aggressive aggressive.

nocoolnamesleft · 04/08/2019 16:03

Hope you're not waiting too long to be seen.
