New Kitchen - tell me what I need to remember

So having saved & delayed for a few years we are now ready to completely redo our kitchen. The existing kitchen has possibly been in place since the block was built in 1970s / 1980s although we have replaced cupboard doors about 10 years ago.
It is a narrow / galley style room.
I have remembered to think about where the bin will go and where the tea towels will hang. What else do I need to remember please?

You will need more plug sockets than you would ever imagine.

I agree with the sockets. Our builders were amazed where we asked them to put them but we use them all on a regular basis.

We have a small galley kitchen and the two best things were a) higher than average cupboard, they go nearly up to the ceiling, so much more space for things y U don’t need on a regular basis and b) only drawer units at the bottom. Again, more space, easier access and looks so much neater as nothing can vanish in the depths of a cupboard.

Where your sink is in relation to the hob and where you'll put hot stuff down when you take it out the oven. You don't want to be traipsing up and down with either of those things

Keep all the food together, larder next to fridge freezer.

Keep all the crockery near the dishwasher/sink.

Pan drawers are awesome

SpoonBlender · 04/08/2019 14:41

Pan drawers are not only awesome, but better in every conceivable way than pan cupboards.

Pull out bins in cupboards if you have the space for it, so great and particularly in a galley as they don't get in your way ALL THE TIME.

Get the cooker hood positioned so it doesn't smash anyone in the head. I'm tall and regularly get whacked by them.

Undercupboard lighting. Lighting in general - make sure everywhere you'll be prepping food has at least two lights on it and you're not cutting in your own shadow.

This is the link to the excellent kitchen lessons learned thread, there is loads of good advice and I found that it really helped focus my mind of what I did and didn’t want and what would work on my space.

I came here to link to that lessons learnt thread, bit I've been beaten to it.
It's REALLY comprehensive!

GrandmaSharksDentures · 04/08/2019 15:13

That's the thread I was searching for before starting this one - THANK YOU!
