Braces , how long will this pain last?

I had braces fitted just under a week ago, they bloody hurt, the only, pain killer that works is co-codamol but I can't take it all the time as makes me groggy. I can only eat very soft foods, I almost feel liked my teeth are bruised.

Anyone experienced this? How long will I be in pain? I really thought I would be used to the, by now.

I had braces years ago - they would hurt for a day or two after being tightened, I’m sure it wasn’t the whole week. I certainly wouldn’t have taken a pain killer as strong as that! I think they’ve been tightened too much - can you make an appointment to get them checked?

EchoLimaYankee · 04/08/2019 09:23

Mine used to hurt for around 5 days when I had them adjusted. It was horrible and I hadn’t been warned at all by my orthodontist at all.

should wear off in a few days max...

DD had 5 days pain after initial fitting and then a day or two after every tightening.

BillThePony · 04/08/2019 09:25

I have only had them on for 5 days, I will call the orthodontist tomorrow for a chat.

I expected some discomfort but not this?

Da used to have pain for up to 5 days after adjustment and after they were initially fitted it was 2 weeks before they settled down, his whole mouth was swollen, poor boy!!

No, orthodontists gloss over this part of treatment AND the fact teeth can shift really fast and you can need to factor in adjustment a lot sooner than the 6-8 week check up.

CatPunsFreakMeowt · 04/08/2019 09:30

I only had pain for a couple of days after adjustments and could be managed with ibuprofen/ paracetamol. Definitely worth a check that all is well.

Mine hurt for well over a week, as you said like a bruised/aching feeling. I couldn’t stand any pressure on them, cleaning my teeth was awful. I couldn’t even push the wax onto the brackets, I had to soften it with a hair dryer first. It did stop though and then after each adjustment it would ache for a couple of days. I actually started to like that feeling because I’m my mind it meant my teeth were moving. Once I started seeing the changes I really enjoyed the whole process. It’s well worth every little bit of discomfort.

BillThePony · 04/08/2019 09:48

I guess on the bright side I will drop a few pounds.

Luckily the brackets are not rubbing so I don't have the added soreness. It my teeth at the front that are throbbing.

I just keep thinking about by nice straight teeth at the end

The pain is definitely worse and lasts longer when the braces are first fitted than when they are tightened.

Too long ago to remember mine Grinbut both dcs suffered for at least a week and needed ++painkillers before it gradually started settling. Each adjustment, I would say, was just a few days and often doesn't require painkillers.

LoafofSellotape · 04/08/2019 09:52

It means they're on the move!

Scrambled eggs, noodles, soup, mashed potatoes- all food ds had after adjustment.

Aqueo517 · 04/08/2019 09:54

It’s so so worth it. How old are you? I had mine done when I was 33, why did I wait so long! It’s a strange sensation, having all that metal in your mouth, feels like Lego bricks glued to your teeth! You do soon get used to it though. When they eventually come off your mouth feels just as strange without them. I had my teeth whitened afterwards, couldn’t believe the difference it made to my confidence.

BillThePony · 04/08/2019 09:59

Sellotape. You have just described my current diet Smile

Aqueo I am 40, did have them as a teen but some moved quite badly, orthodontist will put a fixed retainer on this time to stop that happening.

Ah, the joy of braces. Had them in my early teens, was absolutely dreadful. One of my most vivid memories is sitting on a cross country train a few days after getting them, trying to eat a Pringle and crying. It does go, and it eventually feels perfectly normal. It will hurt again after every tightening but not as intensely as the initial fitting.

Haworthia · 04/08/2019 10:28

I don’t remember how long it took the pain to subside after the initial fitting (it was about 25 years ago Smile) but I do remember the day or two of pain after being tightened. I remember eating a cereal bar at break time at school because I was hungry, and then having to sit an exam in agony because I’d set my teeth off!

It really is worth it though.
