Dislocated toe anyone?

In a freak sofa-related accident on holiday I managed to dislocate my toe and tear a ligament. It was manipulated back into place by the hospital on Tuesday and strapped up for the next 4 weeks to allow the ligament to heal. I can’t walk on it yet, although my moment of progress today was being able to take 2 or 3 steps on it whilst leaning heavily on my crutches. The evening swelling is driving me crazy though - anybody have experience of this that can tell me when the swelling stops? I feel like I’m about ready to chop off my toe as the combined effect of the swelling and the taping up makes it so difficult to get to sleep!

Have you got it propped up? You need to prop it up so it's raised.

I only know cold for swellings, could you stand something out the freezer on it? If that's the wrong advice I'm sure someone will be along to correct me as I'm not sure.

Hope you're on the mend soon though.Flowers

Thanks gamerchick - I’m trying to prop it up as much as possible and it does tend to help it a bit, but also trying to use it a bit as dr said (I think - my French is not great) that it was important to walk on it to avoid DVT. I guess I just want to know when I’ll be back to normal because then I can count the days down and i’ll feel more in control Grin

Keep it propped up at the same height as your knee for as long as you are sitting, and don't sit on a hard chair for any length of time. (My Nan had lymph trouble and had to manage swollen legs.)

Prop it up above heart level. When I had a bad foot I used to rest it on the back of the sofa. At night it helps to poke it over the edge of the mattress so you’re not putting any pressure on it.

Thanks all, it is ever so slightly improved today and icing it last night helped a little bit with the swelling- I guess I’m just getting impatient- I’m not very good at sitting still for long periods of time, especially in the summer holidays when there’s plenty to do.
