What is more expensive in French Supermarkets?

If you were going on holiday in France self catering for a fortnight. What would you bring to cut costs?

Crappy exchange rate and high prices anyway.

I have the basics, sauces, olive oil, cleaning stuff etc.

But what else is way more expensive there than here?

We can't bring any fridge/freezer stuff. Will bring fruit and veg in a big cool bag.

Fruit and veg is dirt cheap for in season stuff at fruit and veg shops, as are baguettes. Pre prepared/packaged stuff like pasta sauces are much more pricey, as are things like nappies and wipes and toiletries.

I think meat is expensive, but it's generally good quality.
Some cheeses too but others are good value like supermarket own brand Brie or emmental.
Own brand beer is cheap! Bottled water, again own brand, is pennies. UK-type breakfast cereals will cost more.
I believe nappies cost more in France so if you need them for a DC perhaps you should bring them with you. But baby food in jars is quite cheap and very good IMO.
Some toiletries are good value IME.

Don’t take fruit and veg- we’re just back from a week in Brittany and the fruit and veg in french supermarkets is excellent- much better quality than here and generally not any more expensive. My mouth is watering just thinking of their tomatoes Smile

I'm only going to get bananas, apples, onions, blueberries. I adore the French lettuces and tomatoes.

Pasta: .45 per 500g
Basmati rice: 1.30
Sugar .70 per kilo

Lidl is everywhere and good value, markets are good for fresh veg.

If you shop in Lydl or LeaderPrice for the basics it's a lot cheaper than Intermarché or Le Grande Frais. Local markets for delicious flavoursome fruit and veg.
