I'm off to Dublin for a couple of days next week with DH. I'm looking for recommendations for restaurants and places to see.

Staying in a city centre hotel, I have a couple of dietary restrictions (mainly a cheese allergy) but can usually find something on most menus that I can eat.

14 Henrietta St and the Little Museum of Dublin are worth a visit, hop on hop off bus is great for getting your bearings.

TheWoollybacksWife · 03/08/2019 23:32

Thank you @motorcyclenumptiness I'd forgotten about the HOHO bus. I've used them in other cities and they are great for getting your bearings.

I'll google your other suggestions too.

Go for a meal at The Boxty House on Temple Bar (I recommend you pre-book if you can).
The sightseeing bus is also worth it.

National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin... beautiful place

Go find the deer in the Phoenix Park

Dublin Zoo is one of the best zoo's in Europe

Tayto park is not far from Dublin if you're looking for a theme park type experience

Dundrum/ Blanchardstown for shopping

Get a proper chipper dinner Grin Beshofs is a good place to start.

If I think of anything else tomorrow I'll let you know

Oh just stay away from the touristy food places that do the like a of stew n that. They tend to be extremely overpriced

Happysummer2020 · 04/08/2019 01:00

The guiness brewery is an excellent museum.

Harriedharriet · 04/08/2019 01:57

Someone told me recently that one of the theatres is doing Great Gatsby. You have to go in dress and all the seats are taken out so you are at the party. Anyone local know anything about it. Sounds pretty wonderful...

MrsKHB · 04/08/2019 02:02

Kilmainham Gaol.

Palsof · 04/08/2019 02:44

Viking Splash Tour lots of fun Smile

Palsof · 04/08/2019 02:45

Also, Marker Hotel has a fab rooftop cocktail bar, great view of city and blankets if it’s chilly.

crisscrosscranky · 04/08/2019 06:25

I highly recommend The Hairy Lemon for a meal- best stew I've ever had!

mathanxiety · 04/08/2019 08:37

If the weather is nice and you have a little time, take the Dart south to Killiney and climb Killiney Hill - great views of the city, the sea, and off towards Wicklow. Or take the Dart north to Howth and hike the clifftop trail for more great views and a good stretch of the legs.

elizabethdraper · 04/08/2019 13:24

Stay away from temporary and the surrounding area

elizabethdraper · 04/08/2019 13:24

Ffs templebar

TheWoollybacksWife · 04/08/2019 15:32

Thank you for all the suggestions.

I've put the Botanic Gardens, the Gaol and the Splash Tour on the list. DH has already said he wants to visit either the Guinness brewery or the Jameson's distillery.

The weather doesn't look brilliant so I'm not sure about Killiney or Howth but if we get a bright day they would be perfect.

We are going with Ryanair. Shame that my baggage allowance is barely enough for my clean undies and a toothbrush - I'd love to do a fancy dress Great Gatsby.

Restaurant and cocktail recommendations look fantastic.

Is there any particular reason for staying away from Templebar elizabeth?

Don't spend long in temple bar

St Stephens green and grafton street for a wander around

Celticrose · 04/08/2019 15:44

Howth is lovely and me and DH just love to walk down the pier and watch the boats. There are loads of seafood restaurants on the pier along with fishmongers might be a tad smelly and difficult to smuggle any seafood on the return flight
There is also a takeaway chippy as well.
Or you can take the dart out the other way to Dun Laoghaire which is also very nice to visit.

There is Dublin Castle and St Michans church with the balcony carved with musical instruments where Handel's Messiah was first played if that would be something that would interest you.

bubblesforlife · 04/08/2019 15:48

For good bars, around Camden street will be good fun.
Fancy bars, check out Bar 37 & Cafe en Seine, House.
Club - copper face jacks, classy establishment!! Wink
Steak restaurant- FX Buckley’s
Other good restaurants: Farm, Saba
Burger: Bunsen

babysnowman · 04/08/2019 16:10

I would recommend going to the Gravediggers pub (John Kavanagh's) by Glasnevin cemetery. The pub part is really traditional, and the restaurant part does a lovely coddle.

bluebellation · 04/08/2019 16:13

If you love fish, I recommend Catch22 for dinner.

AdaColeman · 04/08/2019 16:25

The National Library in Kildare Street often has really interesting cleverly presented exhibitions in the basement, the one featuring W B Yeats might still be on, with lots of family items and creative displays.
The building is beautiful too.

AdaColeman · 04/08/2019 16:36

I like Fallon & Byrne in Exchequer Street for lunch or dinner, and Cafe en Seine for drinks/snacks.
Have a fantastic time, Dublin is a wonderful city!

OMGshefoundmeout · 04/08/2019 17:00

I’m not much of a fan of Dublin but the zoo is nice. And the Dart to Dun Laoghaire has beautiful views over Dublin Bay and DL is a nice place to wander around and look at the shops. The Guinness Storehouse is absolute hell, it’s boring, overcrowded and overpriced so avoid that.

You will be spoilt for choice for food. I love burgers and there are two branches of a burger chain called The Counter that do the best burgers I’ve ever eaten. For a cheap and cheerful breakfast /brunch there is a pancake place called Counter on William St near Trinity that does lovely pancakes, waffles and juices. Yum. I’d go to Dublin just to eat tbh.
