15 minutes to grab essentials - what would you take?

I hope this isn’t insensitive in light of Whaley Bridge, but it got me thinking, if I was in a similar situation, what would I grab in 15 minutes?
I wouldn’t have left without dcat. Otherwise precious photos, (adopted) dds’ memory books, camera and iPad as there are further photos on those, a few clothes. I’m not very materialistic so don’t have much jewellery or stuff like that. Passports, birth certificates, school exam certificates etc if I had time.
What would you grab?

I’m in a second floor flat small enough that I’ve been known to pack for a weekend away in 20 minutes! But in order of priority:

Cat
Passport
Handbag (incl. phone, charger and purse because they’re always in there)
Spare contacts and if I were on any medication, that too

Jewellery - I always wear the most important bits but there’s still some family pieces I’d want to grab if I could
Toothbrush, spare clothes, big scarf
Laptop

In dreamland I’d get my guitar and a couple of pieces of art too but don’t think I could carry those with the cat 😂

Mintjulia · 03/08/2019 18:58

DS, Purse, passports, birth certificates, phone, jewellery, box of ds’s baby stuff, change of clothes, toiletries, car.

QuestionableMouse · 03/08/2019 19:00

Pets. Hopefully my big cat would be in or I'd just have to leave her and hope for the best. One indoor cat and one dog. Food and supplies for both.

Laptop, external hard drive and tablet. I have stuff in there I could never replace.

Clothes, toiletries, drinks and food. You never know what you might need.

I have a three story house so I'd move as much upstairs as possible. All my photos and important stuff are locked in a safe so they'd hopefully be okay.

SalrycLuxx · 03/08/2019 19:01

Passports, external hard drive with all our documents and photos on it, cat, the safe, children’s comforters.

That’s it really. I mean, I’d grab some clothes too, but I view those as expendable.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 03/08/2019 19:02

Writing that has made me realise how bloody fortunate I am that it’s unlikely I’ll ever be in that position. I think we’re going to have many more emergencies like this in the coming years. Thinking of the rescue services now; does anyone know the best place to make a donation to them?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/08/2019 19:02

Husband, children, animals, paperwork folder.

Nothing else really matters, in the grand scheme of things.

If I had enough time I'd grab the DCs memory boxes, my Granny's engagement ring and my husband's grandfather's fob watch.

Violetroselily · 03/08/2019 19:02

My handbag
Box file with all my important docs
Toiletry bag (I have one packed already with minis)
Medication

And I'd chuck a fee outfits into a bag

HappyNOTdriving · 03/08/2019 19:03

I am planning on putting all my photos on an external hard drive once I buy it.

So my cat with her bowls and a few pouches of food and her medication.
My walking stick
Handbag its also got my purse and house key and passport in it.
Coat
Chuck a few bits of to hand clothes in a bag
Tin with my small amount of emergency money for if my bank card breaks so I could get some food or buy a toothbrush etc
The external hard drive
iPad and phone with chargers and cable

All of it would fit into a small hold-all except the cat who goes in her box.

Serious preppers keep a bag packed by the door don’t they?

It's a point of pride for lots of people. The idea is, if you live in an earthquake zone or tsunami area, or a forest fire zone, that you shouldn't be a burden. You should be entirely self-supporting for at least 48 hours so the emergency services can deal with older/younger people and people with additional needs. If they need to help you, you failed.

I do actually think a small amount of prepping is sensible. Anyone can experience DV or a fire. A go bag is just common sense. Prepping is seen as whacky and a bit nuts but it is sensible.

Dc. Ds' medicine because it's really difficult to get hold of locally and if we had to leave urgently the local hospital the only way to get it without a few days wait would likely be being cleared too. Each of the children's grab boxes, has what they would need for a few days if grandparents urgently needed to take over. Ds' carrier and pushchair. Our black box, has important documents in and an emergency stash of cash. What ever food I could manage to carry on top from the emergency cupboard. All stored conveniently closely together. But frankly as long as I got out with the children and ds' medicine anything else would be a bonus.

Dh would likely fall to whatever inpending doom was threatening us as he can never leave on time with everything he needs... Or be dragged out by me if I had the time.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 03/08/2019 19:08

If shit did hit the fan and I had to leave, a would just pick up handbag and a basic bag for baby.

Although it's lovely that people want to take pets, in reality what are you going to do with them? Unless you are going to stay with family of course.

With my handbag/purse I would have my medication, phone, money or bank/credit cards so would be able to get anything I needed once safe.

HappyNOTdriving · 03/08/2019 19:09

If I had time I'd grab my jewellery too but depending on why we had to leave I'd probably be able to eventually go back for it if the house still exists after whatever event has happened.

cantfindname · 03/08/2019 19:12

My cat. Nothing else matters or is of any value.

BelulahBlanca · 03/08/2019 19:13

Baby, important documents box, iPad and phone.

Papergirl1968 · 03/08/2019 19:15

It makes me think that I ought to copy important photos and documents, and if possible keep them somewhere where they are easy to grab.

Dog
Inhalers
Bag with purse
Phone and chargers
Passports
DDs favourite toy
Guinea pigs

Everything else is easily replaced.

crustycrab · 03/08/2019 19:17

Kids, memory boxes, phone, iPads, passports, money boxes, one sentimental painting, snacks, water, clothes, chargers...I reckon I could do a decent sweep of the house in 15 minutes if OH was getting the kids into the car and dragging the cases out for me. Scary situation though

Sarahlou63 · 03/08/2019 19:18

Living in a fire area I have an emergency bag packed from May to October. Passport, birth cert, Irish Foreign Birth cert (yes!!), horse and dog passports/medical books plus a change of clothes.

I'd also grab my mac, tablet, phone and chargers.

crustycrab · 03/08/2019 19:18

I'd check on neighbours too. They are more important than clothes and iPads

lljkk · 03/08/2019 19:21

My quilts! Them & living creatures are the only irreplaceables.

Cousin got burnt out of her home 2 yrs ago. Had 5 minutes to gather her stuff. Couldn't save her quilts. :(

AfterSchoolWorry · 03/08/2019 19:24

Child
Phone and charger
Vape and juice and charger

AfterSchoolWorry · 03/08/2019 19:26

Shit, forgot meds. 💊

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/08/2019 19:30

Although it's lovely that people want to take pets, in reality what are you going to do with them? Unless you are going to stay with family of course.

Well not leave them to burn, drown or starve... Even leaving the door open is preferable to leaving them to die. The firefighters I've spoken to say that dogs and cats tend to survive as long as they aren't trapped. So just making sure they can get out is the thing for me. Although I couldn't leave the dog. He's pathetic on his own.

Knitwit99 · 03/08/2019 19:31

Glasses, contact lenses, phone and charger. Those are the only things I really would struggle without. I am really short sighted.
The kids memory books if I remembered them, and a little pouch of jewellery that belonged to my great granny. And the pets. Pretty much everything else can be replaced.

Angrybottlethrower · 03/08/2019 19:34

Medication, phone, bottle of water, dog
