Do you remember having snacks as a child?

I remember September onwards being allowed satsumas and feeling lucky if I went to a friends house and was allowed crisps, apart from this and the occasional ice lolly in the summer we never had them. I wonder when they became popular

Quite different lljkk those are more homely things. I was thinking more of packaged on the go snacks.

IIRC, Food was a much larger % of domestic income in 1960s Britain than it is today. Which I imagine is real reason there wasn't a snack food culture for a long time. Most families had to stretch income.

I feel sure Frank McCourt talks about penny sweets in Angela's Ashes, actually. Totally out of his family's means most of the time. He had many stories about eating sugar & butter on bread, though.

I wonder if from 1950s onwards (or earlier) that packaged snack foods existed widely, and snack habits for many adults were common, but kids either didn't get given pocket money (Ellen McArthur boat saving story, right?) or the parents refused casual products b/c too expensive for the household budget to buy regularly.

In the 1950s -- Not so many snacks, but three full meals!
Breakfast was bacon, eggs, toast, juice, cereal and milk
Lunch was a meat, two vegetables, bread, glass of milk and dessert
Supper was soup, meat, vegetables, bread, milk, and a dish of ice cream
Only got an afterschool snack at my grandmother's house -- it was a bread roll with butter and jam.
