letting the reviews get in my head

Holiday booked and paid for at end of August me DH and 4 kids....I keep reading the reviews on where we have booked and some are worrying the hell out of me. I chose the place and at the time did a quick review check and all looked ok. Went back on and some have been added since who are either there now or been in the last few weeks and its awful.
Now im worried i have ruined our week away before we even take off
Im scared its going to be an horrendous week and it will be all my fault!!

What are the reviews complaining about?

allinmyhead12 · 02/08/2019 11:20

rooms not up to standard, not enough towels, long food queue's, pools closed due to kids using them as a toilet
Then you go back a few and others are like it was brilliant the food was great etc etc...im so confused and worried.

If the reviews are mostly good or excellent, I don't generally worry.

Some people will moan about anything and how do you know if the person doing the review has the same expectations as you?

Many people will complain about food in hotels if there are bones and shells or it's not beige enough for their liking. The 'kids using the pool as a toilet' could be a one off and that's not the hotel's fault and those kids are not likely to still be there at the end of August Smile

Take a few extra towels if that worries you and enjoy your holiday, I'm sure it will be fine.

Mrsjayy · 02/08/2019 11:30

Thing is busy hotels in high season are going to have food queues pooping in pools is revolting but that was probably resolved quickly and towels you can ask for more it will be fine AND some folk just love a bloody moan and go power crazy on trip advisor.

allinmyhead12 · 02/08/2019 11:34

i think i find the whole holiday thing stressful as it is with the four kids, we are a blended family so can be a bit on the difficult side trying to keep them all on side. its not often we are all together for this amount of time so when we are its hard to keep them all happy
And i cant pre book the seats (without paying) so just hoping that the airline is sensible and sits us as a three and a three

As writing this i can see im being very drama queen etc but just cant seem to shift the thoughts and accept it is what it is!!!!

You are not being drama queen at all organising a holiday for 6 people is going to be an arseache but try your best to relax check in early as you can to avoid seat issues and go with the flow .

I once worked myself up over reviews - we were going away with family and someone had gone back to look at reviews again a month or so before the holiday and suggested trying to rebook elsewhere! We didn't and it was fine. Some of the complaints in the reviews were ridiculous and wouldn't have been problems if they'd read the description of the accommodation. Things will always be busier in school holidays anyway.

I've always paid the extra for pre booked seats since having DC as it's one less thing to worry about. Do you check in online? If you do I suggest you do so as soon as it opens for the best chance of being allocated seats together, as if a lot of people have pre booked then it's unlikely you'll get 2 rows of 3 unless you check in very quickly. Most airlines count the seats directly in front of, behind or across the aisle as "next to" with regard to having to seat you with the children, not just the seat actually next to them, so be prepared for that just in case.

Pagwatch · 02/08/2019 11:51

You are just feeling the pressure of being the ones who booked it. I’m sure it will be fine. People post reviews for all sorts of reasons. I tend to look at the ration of how many broadly good vs how many complaining.
You can get yourself into a right panic if you keep second guessing yourself. Try really hard to stop looking at the reviews

areyoubeingserviced · 02/08/2019 11:55

There are always going to be people who complain about something .
If the room is not up to standard, I am sure that it will be cleaned again or you will be given another room. If there are not enough towels, I am sure that they will give you some more towels. If the pool is dirty, they will clean it.
Many of these issues can be solved if you ask.

Maybe the pooping child/children will have gone home before your arrival. That would bother me most as it puts the pool out of action and I never fancied using it again after it happened.

TooTrueToBeGood · 02/08/2019 12:07

Reviews have to be assessed holistically. It's easy to focus on the negative ones if you re a worrier but there will always be negatives and often from people who like to moan or have unrealistic expectations.

As the holiday is booked and paid for now, just stop looking at the reviews if they are stressing you out.

LittleLongDog · 02/08/2019 12:13

Best to prepare for this not to happen (I’m assuming none of the DC are very very young?). Then if it does you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

TSSDNCOP · 02/08/2019 12:20

You need to take reviews apart line by line;

The child pooping is not the hotels fault, them not dealing with it would be bad

It’s peak season; if there were no queue it would be unusual. Get round this by pre-booking restaurant tables - we are a group of 8 and do this for 7:30 when eating in the hotel.

Rooms grubby; instant complaint if it’s true but IME (I’m a hotel veteran) there are a lot of people that book a mountain view and on arrival pull this stunt for an upgrade.

As a pp said if the majority of reviews are good chances are you’ll be absolutely fine. Have a great tome!

NoSauce · 02/08/2019 12:26

It’s like worrying about the weather, there’s nothing you can do, you’ve booked and paid for it so stop reading the reviews and try and look forward to your hols Smile

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 02/08/2019 14:28

When it comes to reviews you need to remember a few things:

1.some people are ridiculously fussy
2.everyone has different tastes and standards and what would be amazing for you could be someone else's nightmare holiday
3.A LOT of people expect 5 star holidays on a 2 star budget.
4.some people complain for upgrades, refunds or discounts.

  1. Some things are purely about luck, nothing to do with the hotel

One hotel I went to had a 1 star review and one of the complaints was that the trip to the hotel (at 3 am) was very dark and the roads didn't have enough lights on.

I've read many reviews about the food being bland . I wouldn't call 7 different types of sides, mains ( english, local and from other countries), salads,a barbecue and god knows how many deserts bland. And that was just the main restaurant.

Look through what "scared" you and actually think would it really upset/affect you. For example not enough towels wouldn't even register. We avoided the food queues by going quite early, and if not ready for the day we went back to the room. Depending on how many pools there are ,one being shut(even the kids one) wouldn't be an issue for a day or two.
