Has anyone ever bought a globe?

I'd love to get DH a good quality globe for our wedding anniversary as we both love travelling and we're fascinated by maps etc. However, the really amazing ones are thousands of pounds, well beyond my budget of around £300, and I can't find a decent-quality one elsewhere. Even the ones in John Lewis are crappy - mismatched joins in the paper etc.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good quality globe that would come in within budget? Would like it to be a decent size (minimum 30cms diameter) but it doesn't have to be floor-standing.

Thank you!

Have u considered 2nd hand? I know someone who has inherited one (floor standing) and doesnt even want it but is hanging on to it in case their children might be interested in the future (so it's gathering dust in the loft).

I walked past this place the other day and their globes looked

I was looking at globes in Stanfords in Covent Garden last week. There was a particularly nice one: internally lit (don't know how you change the bulb) and it showed some of the ocean floor too. I think it comes in two sizes. The smaller was about £120 and I think was about 30cm. The larger was on a high shelf so I couldn't see the label.

Can't remember the model name but I'll probably recognise it on their website. The oceans were very pale, if not white.

We were given a classic modern day globe on Rand base which is beautiful from Greaves and Thomas as a wedding present. You can add a personal label to it. The website is terrible (though that might just be my phone!) but ours was £145 plus delivery according to the website. http://www.globemakers.com/facsimile/globe_modern.html

Ah these are great, thank you so much - I've had a look at Stanfords and can already see a couple of possibilities, and I'll have a look at Greaves and Thomas as well.

It was so hard to work out just from googling which ones would be good quality, so it's ideal to get recommendations!

@YogaLite I'm definitely open to a second-hand one so I'm keeping an eye on eBay and the other online marketplaces too 👍🏻

Stanfords Covent Garden.

We bought a globe ... not long before the collapse of the Soviet Union. So be careful to check the age if you get a second hand one unless you want it for history rather than current travel especially in the Balkans and Baltic.

Ooooooh good point, @ErrolTheDragon! Thank you!

I gave my husband one as a wedding present - it's a floor standing one that opens up to reveal an old-fashioned bar inside, with slots for tumblers and space for a couple of bottles. Think it was this one justglobes.uk/globe-bars/scott-globe-bar-made-in-italy.html

They do normal desk globes too and both modern and historical maps Smile
