Weight gain/big baby.

Hi everyone, I’m just here for other people’s stories/reassurance.

I’m currently 39 weeks pregnant and so worried that my baby is going to be massive due to my own mistakes.

I had a 4D scan at 31 weeks where they estimated the baby was 4lb 4oz which I think sounds massive for that age. I also had my midwife appointment at 36 weeks where she told me I had gained 55lbs Blush BlushSad and told me it’s way too much. So now I can’t get over the fear that due to my own fault my baby is going to be massive???!!

Help I’m feeling horrendous :(

I had to go for a scan at 39 weeks as my fundal height had rocketed since my last mw appointment (realistically baby had just turned from back to back), scan said baby was already 10lbs and the doctors heavily pushed induction immediately, and even more so at a follow up a week later. I also had to test my blood 4x a day to check for GD, which I turned out not to have. I'd put on 52lbs by my due date when he arrived at 40+0, 8lbs11, natural birth with 45 mins in 2nd stage. He's now 4 months old, tracking his centile nicely (66th), I'm back at pre-pregnancy weight.

The Fear kicks in massively when you're 39 weeks! Chances are everything will be absolutely fine for you, as it was for me, but do talk to your mw if you're concerned- maybe ring them in the hope of talking to a different one?

I’ve heard mixed opinions from doctors on the weight gain/baby size. I think you’re probably just stressed, really.

I think gestational diabetes is linked but not just gaining more weight than planned in pregnancy.

Linked to big babies I mean.

When I gained a similar amount my consultant advised me to reduce carb intake drastically in last one month of pregnancy as she said babies gain weight from sugar. I didn't follow this advice but maybe you could speak to someone about it . Gained 4stone and my baby was 8lb 3. My second pregnancy I gained half the amount I did in my first and my baby was 8Lb 4.

I gained loads of weight, was referred 3 times for a gestational diabetes test and had a 7lb6/3.3kg baby. My issue was water - not just in my legs but a huge volume of amniotic fluid! I'd lost 9.5kg 3 days after baby was born. I'm still not down to pre-pregnancy weight but that's because I've been stuffing myself with biscuits...

In the nicest way does it matter if the baby is big? Dd was 10lb6 at birth, I had an easy natural birth, no intervention or epidural and everything down below is normal. Shes 3 now, tall for her age but slim

Well that was helpful of her wasn't it??
I gained 20 kilos and my baby was 2 weeks late and an average weight.
I have friends that gave birth to big babies and they didn't gain much.
I was referred to a growth scan last time but then again not sure how accurate they are.
I personally would speak to the midwife and ask her what her suggestions are, because so far she has stressed you out and I would tell her that as well.

@Buyitinbamboo The risk of complications at birth is much higher with massive babies and their mothers.
It didn't go that well for me with DS who was 10lb10 and I ended up with an emergency C-section.

JoJoSM2 · 02/08/2019 16:02

Sorry, meant to say more complications for babies and mums if the babies are large.

MattMagnolia · 02/08/2019 20:06

Your baby doesn’t gain weight every time you eat a hearty meal and mums with bad pregnancy sickness don’t have skinny babies.
Predictions about an unborn baby’s size are wildly inaccurate and big babies don’t mean a difficult birth.
Try to relax and look forward to holding your baby.

I developed type 1 diabetes with my first pregnancy. I gained about a stone and a half during my pregnancy and my baby was over 10lbs at 37 weeks. So no correlation between my weight gain and baby size.

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 02/08/2019 20:16

I put on 3 stone and my son was 10.7
My last pregnancy I actually lost 3 stone whilst I was pregnant through healthy heating and and she was born 3 weeks early weighing 9.14
I think if your going to have a big baby you will whether you gain a lot of weight or not.
