Has anyone taken fluoxetine?

Sorry if this isn't the right place, my head is a mess. After a really dark time and being in such a hard place, after seeing the doctor today I've been put on fluoxetine. Has anyone else had this and could tell me what it was like, both physically and mentally? The doctor didn't literally say you have depression but will I have been diagnosed with this on record do you think? TIA

I take them and they've done me the world of good. You wouldn't struggle with a broken arm so why should you struggle with this? You just need some help with your chemical levels thats all.

Thanks for replying @S0CKS. Does this mean I have depression? I didn't ask the GP, wasn't thinking clearly when I was in there.

I take it, in combination with mirtazipine, and it has really helped my depression.

The one side effect I really noticed was severe heartburn, but that is avoidable if you take it with plenty of water - half a glassful or more, or just a sip.

Yes, I took it for two years and it worked amazingly well.

stargirl1701 · 01/08/2019 18:26

I take 3x20mg daily for anxiety. GP has not mentioned depression. They have helped enormously but my anxiety symptoms reoccur when I have my period. Still trying to figure out what to do about that.

Thanks all. I can't see a light at the end of this tunnel. The GP said they'd call me with an action plan but didn't. Feel so, so down and 'D'H is not being understanding about it.

Taken a few years ago and yes they are usually used for depression, worked very well for me.There is no shame in having depression 1 in three people will have it at some time in their lives

AmericanLemonade · 01/08/2019 18:34

I’m on it, much happier and a different person to be honest. Flowers

Brilliant stuff, took them for nearly a year after my dad died very young, I had a baby under a year as well, they really helped

arrghitsbitingme · 01/08/2019 18:44

Yarp ... been on them for some time -both for depression and anxiety. I still have the odd bad day but find I can cope with a whole lot more than before I was on them.

qazxc · 01/08/2019 18:52

I didn't get any side effects from them.
It wasn't a magic cure but took the edge off so that I could go from function a lot better than I had been.
It took a little while to feel a difference.
It was diagnosed to me for postnatal depression and anxiety.

bringbacksideburns · 01/08/2019 18:55

Just started taking them. Was on an HRT patch and it made me feel very low. GP said it can be good for symptoms of menopause such as hot flushes and low mood. I was also getting anxious.

Only been taking them a couple of weeks but feel bit better and not tearful. Only side effect I've found is slight nausea.

TattiePants · 01/08/2019 18:59

I took them about 6-7 years ago for about a year. It was enough to help me clear my head, function on a daily basis and make some decisions that I had been putting off for a long time that improved my life immeasurably. I did also have counselling after 6 months which helped too.

Physically I didn't have any adverse reactions. I'm a terrible sleeper and I was really worried it would make that worse but it didn't. Mentally, it took about 3 weeks before I began to feel the effects and it felt like the fog I had been in for many months was starting to lift.

If the GP doesn't contact you then make sure you chase them up as there should be a plan. It also sounds like you need some support; is there any one in real life that can help if DH isn't?

My DD takes it for anxiety, she is much much better
