Do I actually NEED curtains in my living room?

I live in a traditional Yorkshire terrace house, front door opens directly into living room. Living room isn't tiny and has lovely tall ceilings but space isn't plentiful.

I've had curtains up since I moved in but they look bulky and seem to take up too much of the room just hanging there iyswim.

Am thinking of wooden blinds instead? Like in the photograph.

Would they look ok do you think? Clueless about home stuff.

Thanks 🍷

Wood blinds would be fine, how about a Roman blind too, might make it feel more homely in winter?

How draught proof are your windows?

I have had my small terraced cottage for over 30 years and have never had curtains. Over the years it has been Venetian metal blinds, roller blinds, wooden blinds and am now considering installing wooden shutters. I agree curtains can be rather bulky.

We live in a Victorian terrace too and no curtains in our downstairs rooms. We have the wooden horizontal blinds only and it looks fine

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/08/2019 17:53

I think that looks fine. Most of my rooms don’t have curtains.

My sitting room has wooden Venetians and very slim eyelet curtains framing the bay window that are never actually closed.

All our upstairs rooms have only wooden shutters and the rooms feel much more spacious I think. We only have roller blinds downstairs too and I would like to swap the living room to shutters, but we have a picture and dado rail so working up to sorting it out as they would need to be fitted around them.

Thanks all.

Would love shutters but don't have the budget.

Windows are relatively new and very draught proof. House is super cosy.

Am a bit scared of measuring for the blinds myself and getting it wrong!

We bought cheap ikea Venetians and DH cut them down to size.

No you don’t. Love that photo. I have wooden blinds in my living room which are shut only when I go to bed. Curtains are there as dressing and warmth. They have never been shut.

I just had voiles up at my windows

I’ve been wondering this too. We’ve just bought our first house (we’re in the middle of renovating it top to bottom 😩) and I don’t really like the look of curtains. However, I don’t know what else I’d have. The living room window is massive, like a cinema screen into the living room, so I need to put something up.

I’ve seen roller blinds that are two layers, like this photo, but I’m still not 100% sure about them.

I have blinds all over my house - no curtains. They were expensive though - I love the feeling of space and light they give. Go for it. This is what I have (in the US not sure if they are in the UK)

Just something else to think about. When we've taken our curtains down to decorate a room, I massively notice an increase in noise - even with carpets. But I have two very noisy DCs so that's a dealbreaker for me! Smile

Thanks all.

Have bitten the bullet and ordered wooden blinds. Will update when they arrive!
