Camping- how do you cook when it's raining?

We're setting off for our holiday on Friday night, first day of holiday is Saturday and the weather has forecast rain for the first week at least Sad

This is our first time going camping, we assumed it wouldn't really be safe cooking inside the tent but what else are we meant to do if it's going to be raining so much?!

We are going to a campsite near Padstow that we've been to a couple of times before but hired a static caravan. You have a great view of the Padstow lifeboat station from the beach and you can go and watch the lifeboat practice launch on a Wednesday evening which is pretty cool.

Mother Ivey's Bay? Smile

Madfrogs · 02/08/2019 16:14

If you have a lidl anywhere on your trip they are selling sun shade things that double up as a cheap tarp £14 think it’s 2000 HH so good enough to cook under. Packs small.

Enjoy your break

This is why we have a pick-up truck. We still run out of space!

I want a Nivara to be honest and we have a people carrier with roof box already. Camping most expensive cheap holiday you can have 😂😂

ODFOx · 02/08/2019 16:46

I'm not seeing tea towel, washing up bowl, loo roll, kitchen roll, or a bottle opener/corkscrew on your inventory OP.

ODFOx · 02/08/2019 16:47

Have a great time!
It's your first time so there will be bits you'll want to change/learn from for next time. See it through your DCs eyes and enjoy the magic!

ODFOx · 02/08/2019 16:52

If you like it and want to make changes next time, consider that your individual camping chairs probably take up more volume than these two and you can have a game of cards if you have a table!
inflatable sofa
table and stools

Well done on your packing OP.
There is camping board under travel: lots of helpful tips there!

The perfect camp kitchen.

I would go to the nearest pub!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 02/08/2019 18:01

Well I wasn't going to list every single item @ODFOx :o We have a couple of tea towels, dishcloths and surely a corkscrew goes without saying? Wink Will buy disposables like kitchen roll and toilet paper when we get there. And we have a washing up bowl that folds flat.

Anyone want to buy a 240ltr roof box? Barely used, just once for approx 30 minutes Grin

Nah, I hear it’s a bit small 😂

Screamanger · 02/08/2019 18:12

We either cook in the porch or make a shelterer. Last time luckily we had the chainsaw with us so we could drop a tree and make a decent shelter

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 02/08/2019 19:14

You can't just chop down random trees Shock

WrongKindOfFace · 02/08/2019 19:27

I’m not a camper, but for next time swapping normal towels for hammam towels saves a lot of space, plus they dry really quickly. Matalan or tk maxx often have them.

Decormad38 · 02/08/2019 19:34

Like this! That's why we no longer camp. Too many cold and wet cooking experiences

Hurray for 4G at the playpark :o

Well our tent nearly blew away last night because of the insanely strong winds we're currently having, DH has gone out to find somewhere to buy some sturdier pegs, the ground is so soft ours just slide straight back out at the slightest pull! Our porch window ripped on the stitching because of the wind. Thank fuck for gaffer tape! And DH scoffed at me insisting we take it Hmm

My friend texted me on Friday and asked if we were okay because she'd heard about the earthquake we had Shock we had no idea! We're not near Falmouth so we didn't feel a thing and we mainly have no internet (except at the playpark Wink ) so hadn't seen any news.

Can you talk me through your kitchen set up @AmarilloVan

I'm particularly interested in the 3 legged thing on the left and the wooden things under the drawers.

AmarilloVan · 10/08/2019 17:12

@MyFoofIsAloof
The three legged thing is a Cadac Gas BBQ which can do so much more: pizzas with a pizza stone and lid, small roast joints, and much more...

The plywood trays I made to fit a space in the boot. They can contain shoes and walking boots and slide under the car.

MyFoofIsAloof · 10/08/2019 19:39

@AmarilloVan

Thanks, I'm very impressed that you custom made trays.

Dowser · 10/08/2019 19:58

Thank goodness you’re ok.
I only do glamping.
Dh now speaking wistfully of his tent that’s in the garage
Well he can put it up next to our static if he wants but I won’t be sleeping in it.
I’ve got the central heating on...and I’ll be climbing into my nice 3/4 bed with electric blanket tonight
( staying at our static till tomorrow night)
