Questions about weight training

I've been exercising 3-5 times a week now since January. This is a really big achievement for me as I've never stuck to any exercise apart from walking for more than 6 weeks. The only thing is, I'm disappointed with the results and it's making lose enthusiasm. I started off trying all the different classes (spin, power pump, conditioning etc) until I had a routine of mainly pump and conditioning. I've recently stopped the classes and have been doing weight training at home as I've heard many times that's the way to see results. But I feel all at sea! I've started following the programme in thinner, leaner, stronger but it feels too easy! I want to get ripped but don't know how. Please help me!

I'm a power lifter that competes and i don't look ripped.

RottnestFerry · 01/08/2019 17:36

Rott does your wife do any cardio or just weights?

Runs and cycles.

She's just back from a trip to the local shop on her bike. Sixteen mile round trip. 1000 calories burnt according to her heart rate monitor thingy.

@chasingseagulls

As part of a PT course, you do Level 3 nutrition with a separate exam. PTs can’t advise on supplements or advice people with health problems etc but ask you to do a diary and give feedback based on healthy eating guidelines.

I'd say I'm fairly naturally strong in my arms but legs not so much. I've been doing squats using a 12kg dumbbell. I'll keep trying with barbell squats but don't want to risk injury so will just take it slowly. Definitely going to look at that book recommendation!

In each hand? How many reps?

I have found this thread very useful! I need to do more weight training too but am a bit self conscious and feel like people are going to be watching me thinking I am doing it wrong

I wouldn't worry about doing it wrong. Everybody does it wrong at some point.

I posted a video of my wife deadlifting on here and somebody pointed out that her form was poor. It was. Constructive criticism is good.

waterSpider · 01/08/2019 20:00

Most people in a gym are too busy watching themselves to watch you (!).
For anyone else watching, well we all had to start somewhere.
But if you can practice some bodyweight stuff (squats, pressups) that is good preparation and development that you can do at home.

neweeeyebrows · 01/08/2019 22:45

A good PT is worth their weight in gold. My body shape has changed in the 8 months I’ve been with mine. He trains with me once a month and will give me feedback on my form which is really important to avoid injury.

Don’t worry about people watching you - as a pp said, most people are too busy looking at themselves. We’re all different, have different goals and progress at different rates depending on age, genetics, time you can realistically set aside to train etc.

As I said before, being ‘ripped’ is a lot of work and discipline and even people who compete won’t have that ripped look all the time.

It sounds like you’re doing really well so just focus on eating well and training and you’ll see the results.
