How to get sweaty smells out of clothes

DuggeesWoggle · 31/07/2019 14:02

Hiding behind the anonymity of Mumsnet as I'm obviously not proud of this but I can't be alone. I'm 8 months pregnant and feel like I've spent the last 2-3 weeks just permanently sweating thanks to the humid weather and an extremely warm office. As a result many of my clothes are now decidedly whiffy, especially in the armpit area, even after having been washed.

What's the best method for getting rid of the stench?

White vinegar.

DuggeesWoggle · 31/07/2019 14:09

Do you rub it in before washing? Or soak in a solution?

Splash of zoflora in your wash

Use bio instead of non-bio and line dry in sunshine.

DonPablo · 31/07/2019 14:11

Use the dettol laundry stuff. If you're washing at low temps you need something to kill the bacteria. Alternatively bio washing powder. And line dried in the sun will help too!

PivotPivotPivottt · 31/07/2019 14:11

What sort of detergent do you use? If I use gel or liquitabs my clothes come out stinking of sweat around the arm pits. Doesn't happy when I use powder though.

Use soap instead of shower he'll

DuggeesWoggle · 31/07/2019 14:24

Switched to soap after reading a thread on here. I think I have some Dettol wash, will bring some of that in. I usually just use ordinary supermarket laundry gel, just checked and it's biological. Typically now looks like sunshine will be in short supply over the next few days - will be lucky to get anything line dried at all!

A few weeks ago I posted on a thread about having to wash DH’s gym kit up to 3 times to get rid of the smell of sweat. Someone recommended a washing liquid called Halo which I bought on Amazon. It does the trick with one 40 degree wash.

PancakeAndKeith · 31/07/2019 14:29

Napisan works well.

DuggeesWoggle · 31/07/2019 14:40

Ooh synthetic gym stuff is the worst, OMG! We have some sports wash and napisan so might try them first.

Another one to soak in white vinegar.

ItchySeveredFoot · 31/07/2019 14:42

Splash of white vinegar in the softener drawer. It also softens clothes slightly without coating things so can be used on towels and sports wear, unlike softener.
I use it for my reusable sanitary towels which I have to wash at 30 so the stain doesn't set. Works a treat and no harsh chemicals.

Sorry posted too quickly
Bar soap is much better at preventing sweaty odour. I like the pears mint or lemon flowers. Less than £1

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 31/07/2019 14:47

yep, I have daily sports kit and I now:

Rinse it in the shower with me immediately after as I shower, so the stink doesn't 'set'
Wash it all on 40 with bio washing powder and laundry detergent
Line dry

So far so fresh!

(I only do a couple loads of washing a week in total, no way I'm running the machine every single day for one set of kit)

Drum2018 · 31/07/2019 14:48

Sprinkle white vinegar on armpits of tops just before wash.

orangeshoebox · 31/07/2019 14:48

bio powder and a long wash with a proper rinse cycle.
ideally wash at 40.

TapasForTwo · 31/07/2019 14:49

Bio washing powder rather than gel.
DD sweats a lot, but her clothes don't smell. I use Ariel powder for whites and lights, and Fairy powder for dark clothes.
