We have just spent a few days in Blackpool and I loved it I know it's got to be your tastes but my DD (5) had the best time.

However me and DH were on one of the piers which was so run down and rusty and at night there was a few drunken parents (I know people like a drink on holiday) but there was young kids practically hanging over the edge which brought us to wonder of many people/kids have fallen off?

I can't imagine there would be none it's so unsafeShock

Piers at night freak me right out, especially if the tide is in. It's called thalassaphobia, I think so I'm obviously going to watch this thread to scare myself unnecessarily Grin.

In the last few years some young men have tried jumping off but I am not aware of anybody falling off and certainly no children. I am more concerned by parents who let their children walk by the sea wall when the tide is high and washing over. It is so easy to get swept into the sea .

Last night a young boy maybe about 3 jumped up on the bench to look to look over the side and if you've been to Blackpool pier you will know there's no safety railings!

I'm just back I love it tooGrin. I was sitting on the benches at the edge of the pier and looking at the massive drop down to the beach and had to move. My toddler was strapped in her buggy but I just couldn't get over the fear she would somehow fall over the edge.

Cross post. That makes me feel ill.

I was there last year. The pier and the big wheel are iconic and I got a shock how shabby and decrepit it all is. I was also on-edge watching children standing hanging over the railShock.
It's such a shame as it's a great atmosphere and it could be fantastic.

Totally agree I'm not bashing Blackpool on anyway it's amazing I loved my first trip I just cannot get over how they are getting away with no safety rail?and how the pier boarding is all rotten but there's a massive big wheel on top of it!its making my stomach turn just thinking about it

Went there a lot as a kid in the 70s. Have family there. People getting into difficulties with tbe strong tides, yes (tragically so). Never heard of people falling off the pier until just now. Larked about there loads as a kid myself and with my dd. Never an issue.

I love piers at night , especially when there are not many people around and all you can hear are the crashing waves the distance fairground music and the Gulls.
The inky blackness and clear crisp nights are lovely.

There's something so lovely about them..I remember a few times looking down and you could just see the sea through the cracks in the floor and it was scary and amazing
