Hi, we're looking to book a 3 night break with 2 children (10 and 4) in tow. We would like to do Cheddar Gorge and Longleat and are jusy wondering what other things there are to amuse the children within the area and recommendations if places to stay in between the two.

Glastonbury Tor - can see for absolutely miles when at the top.

Greenbanks outdoor swimming pool - can stay all day if you like or pop into Clarks Village shopping centre afterwards.

Ham Hill - great for stretching the legs and again can see for miles when you are at the monument and the pub is great and very child friendly

Fleet Air Museum - can see concorde

Haynes Motor Museum - loads of cars new and old

If you have National Trust Passes - see Stourhead, Lytes Cary and Montecute House.

The south coast is really not far so maybe Lyme Regis, Charmouth

Wookey Hole! I love Wookey Hole even as an adult 😁 And for good old fashioned British seaside, Weston-super-Mare.

QuckTheDuck · 31/07/2019 11:42

Crackers.

Wookey hole caves and wells. The cathedral is very pretty.
There's Noah's ark zoo, fleet air arm or further afield is Bristol and Bath.
Glastonbury tor
Weston super mare or burnham on sea

Damntheman · 31/07/2019 12:20

Wookey Hole for sure! My niece performs in a circus there, it's great. Little bit of 'caving' experience can be had there too, it's wonderful :) I love the Mendips.

captainprincess · 31/07/2019 13:08

Definitely Wookey Hole!

CharminglyGawky · 31/07/2019 13:17

Wookey hole!

Grand pier at Weston maybe?

Heyha · 31/07/2019 13:18

Love cheddar, three nights isn't a huge amount of time so I'd do:
A day in Cheddar being a tourist (caves, shops, Jacobs ladder and a walk)
Wookey Hole
Beach day (Weston usually)
Half day in Wells on the way to or from main holiday
Short trip to Street on the way to or from, possibly.

The Fleet air and the Haynes museums are both very good, I'm not into cars or planes but enjoyed both anyway.

Wells is a fab place to visit, even more so if you have seen/like the Simon Pegg film Hot Fuzz, we really enjoyed our visit there, parking wasn’t easy in the summer hols though.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 31/07/2019 13:31

I was going to say pickle but I see someone beat me to it!

ComtesseDeSpair · 31/07/2019 13:56

I never knew there were so many Wookey Hole fans! I took DP once and he was so underwhelmed and won’t go back. Can all of us on this thread arrange to go for a day trip together?? 😀😀

IHeartKingThistle · 31/07/2019 14:07

I'm local and I think Wookey Hole is crap. The caves are OK but Cheddar has caves too!

Make sure you have ice cream in Cheddar with clotted cream on top.

SkydivingKittyCat · 31/07/2019 14:12

Longleat tip - it's an all day trip. Don't go to the safari first, do the house/grounds/maze etc first and go back and do the safari after lunch. It'll be much (much!) quieter, you don't be sat in a nose to tail crawling queue of traffic and being forced along by cars behind you. Much better experience!

SkydivingKittyCat · 31/07/2019 14:14

Also when are you thinking of going? Bristol has lots (aquarium, zoo etc) but also events - the balloon fiesta is coming up but probably too soon unless you're booking last minute.

fussychica · 31/07/2019 14:16

Wells is lovely for a stroll and Stourhead is beautiful, though expensive if you aren't a NT member.

MidsomerBurgers · 31/07/2019 14:45

We stayed at Wookey hole earlier this summer and it was shit!

Wells is wonderful though. We also went on a guided tour around the cathedral. Didn't have time to do the climbing one (I think there are age restrictions on that one though).

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/07/2019 14:51

Cheddar and longleat are both massively expensive. Cheddar is such a rip off. £5 to park. Only the caves are ticketed, but the rest you can get in free, but they like to add it on to pretend you get more for your money.

That aside. Wookey hole is ok, in the 80’s-90’s it was it’s hay day when it was owned by Madame Tussaud’s. Now it’s plain random.

Wells, bishops palace is good. Lovely place to visit. The swans are famous for ringing a bell for food.

Loads of lovely hill walks.

NT properties nearby.

SamBeckett · 31/07/2019 17:28

I was going to say open crackers and slice pickle too but if been beaten to it

sulks a bit

Shoxfordian · 31/07/2019 17:58

Ha. I came on to say sandwich Grin

Ollibetts · 31/07/2019 18:23

Awwww thank you all so much - even for the crackers and pickle tips 😂 Loads of great ideas, I just hope now that 3 nights is enough to squeeze everything in!

There is a lovely twee crazy golf course by the car park in the middle of Cheddar itself. Then obviously get samples from the different cheese shops and try Rich's Cider.

stucknoue · 31/07/2019 20:11

Clarks village - excellent for school shoes even though they no longer manufacture in the U.K.
