Guernsey?

Off to Guernsey on a short break next month. Looking for tips of things to do, places to eat etc. We are right by Perelle Bay (?) but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be beach weather. Would we be better hiring a car or is it quite easy to get around by bus? Had a look at the bus company website but can’t see anything similar to a dayrider/week ticket etc.

Firstly, the forecast isn't that accurate for Guernsey so don't fret Smile

I'm not familiar with Perelle but it's on a bus route into St Peter Port, and there's also a bus which does a circular route. It's £1 a ride or there's a weekly ticket.

Do you have DC? What do you like doing?

Food wise: Octopus, Petit Bistro, Hook, Fat Rascal are all good. What type of food do you like?

I usually get a cab from the airport, then rely on the bus when I go over for work. Sometimes the drivers do an impromptu tour guide thing & are worth every penny!

limitedscreentime · 30/07/2019 23:13

I'd hire a car if I were you. Buses aren't bad but so much easier to plan and hop about if you have a car. Most 'attractions' wouldn't take long to look around unless you want to go on a big walk (some amazing cliff walks especially). If you're a really laid back person and not too fussed about doing much then buses fine but you'll be able to do much more with a car. Go to sark or herm too..... quite magical.

Thank you so far!
Just the two of us. We like walking but only have hand luggage so nothing too serious as wont have the boots/clothes for it. We love seafood. DH is quite interested in the WW2 stuff.

Done some further investigating and I think definitely car hire, although I’ve been slightly terrified by the ‘how to drive in Guernsey’ information I’ve been reading. My family is Cornish - the roads can’t be any more narrow than there, surely!

I'm more used to Jersey, but if Guernsey is like Jersey the narrower roads are at least as bad as the Cornish ones. There are often high banks/walls on both sides.

otoh The speed limits are so low at least you don't meet someone going at 50-60mph.

I'm currently in Guernse y. It's beautiful and I'm loving it!
However we were badly let down by Condor ferries. We booked months ago for 2 of us with a car. Late on Friday night we received a text saying the ferry was cancelled. We were e expecting to leave home at 5 the next morning to drive to the ferry port so we're planning an early night. Instead we were frantically trying to book flights instead, arrange airport parking, try and get a refund from Condor (on hold for ages as everyone else was trying the same) and then repack to flight regulations. Have since found out that the ferries started cancelling crossings on Friday afternoon. They have just resumed on Weds.
I would advise, book flights and hire a car at the airport. We are keen cyclists and have hired bikes. Some of the roads are a bit steep!
Weather is beautiful and we are having a swim every morning before breakfast. Staying near Cobo and the beaches are very peaceful.
I never want to leave!

TeenTimesTwo · 31/07/2019 16:09

Puddle Were you on the Clipper or the fastcat? The fastcat tends to get cancelled more readily in bad weather.

I think you have been very unlucky.

If it was the Clipper, I think they only have the 1 ship so if it breaks down you have to wait for it to be fixed ...

Fallulah · 31/07/2019 18:17

We are flying but it does mean we are having to pack light!

If your DH is interested in world war stuff you have to visit the German Occupation Museum. Doesn't look like anything special to begin with but it is hugely interesting, full of war ephemera and information.

Teentimestwo - it was the Liberation. Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon cancellations were due to a technical issue. Tues cancellations were due to the weather. I read in the Guernsey paper that people turning up to the port on Friday afternoon weren't even told there was a problem. Only when they had been waiting several hours.
We were told 12 hours before our due departure. I believe a lot of people lost their holiday because of this.

sideorderofchips · 31/07/2019 19:43

That’s about right for the liberation. Useless boat ever since it started

For the clipper not to go then you really really don’t want to be sailing. I’ve been on that in a force ten gale and it was horrible!!

I would hire a car as buses are really busy this time of year. But make sure you check the speed limit of the roads you are on (Jersey person here)

DreamingofSunshine · 31/07/2019 22:39

I would recommend the underground hospital museum if your DH likes ww2 stuff.

Driving in Guernsey isn't too bad, the roads are narrow but the speed limits are lower and the other drivers aren't aggressive, and I find they tend to be more lenient to hire cars and overseas number plates. Most important difference is the filter--it looks like a yellow box junction, but instead it's a junction where the cars all take it in turns to go across the junction rather than every person for themselves. They work quite well.

TapasForTwo · 31/07/2019 22:57

I highly recommend a day trip to Sark if you have time.

limitedscreentime · 01/08/2019 11:03

Driving very similar to Cornwall coastal/country lanes! Landscape similar too. Even more of a push to hire a car if you want to do ww2 stuff - lots of bunkers you can explore - pliemont is a good place to drive around for that kind of thing, but there's also the underground hospital and the occupation museum which are more geared up for tourists. Also look at fort grey, castle cornet and fort hommet which are open at certain times.

Walking isn't too hard core, trainers would be fine and most of the beach/cliff restaurants are pretty good for lunch stops.

AutumnCrow · 01/08/2019 11:09

Don't forget to look into health / travel insurance. You'll be outwith the UK and its NHS system and EHICs aren't valid.

We were hoping to visit this summer so I started researching it.

Have a wonderful trip.

Little hidden marina tucked away on the North coast - Beaucette - has a fabulous restaurant for lunch.
