Or any kind of benefit?
Still in own home, and will be able to pay for carers for a bit, but funds diminishing at rapid rate.

Yes, Alzheimer's qualifies you for AA 👍🏻

TooOldForThisWhoCares · 30/07/2019 20:36

Yes, but it depends on the level of severity how much will be awarded: there's a higher and lower rate. Plus I think if a relative is already claiming carers allowance, Attendance allowance can't be claimed at the same time.

Yes to AA. If funds diminising, get a social services care assessment now.

You can claim Carers Allowance for someone who is claiming Attendance Allowance. Have a chat with your local Age U.K. they have benefits advisors who will help you / the person you care for make the claim. Carers Trust are also a good source of advice for unpaid Carers.

It’s v severe now, only able to stay in own home due to large amount of support.
We applied for carers allowance to put towards the carers, but official carer earned/worked too much, despite spending all extra time and energy on patient. She’s retired now, so could claim again, but just spotted attendance allowance isn’t means tested and can go towards your care if you’re paying your own costs.

Yes, the person with Alzheimer's can claim attendance allowance.
However, if her carer has now retired and in receipt of state pension, they cannot claim carers allowance.

tomboytown · 30/07/2019 20:57

Really?
Cos they’re retired they’re now expected to do the caring?!
How about, the carers salary has been greatly reduced, they are older and need a bit of help?
Blimey!

See if you have a local carers support group. They helped me submit an application for my parent we received the higher rate

Visit/contact the citizens Advice Bureau they will help you fill in the forms on any benefit claims that you're entitled to.

Also independent age are really helpful, depending on your age! www.independentage.org/get-support/call-helpline
