Cleaning up after puppy

Whywhywhy1 · 30/07/2019 16:35

We are collecting out puppy next week. He will be 8 weeks only so I’m sure there will be accidents along the way. It’s our first dog so I’m just wondering what is best to clean up puppy accidents from the floors? We have tiles and wood where the puppy will mostly be. Does anyone have the same? Can you recommend what I can clean with please?
Tia

The same stuff if you, your husband or your children had shit and pissed on the floor! Grin

Or you can get some enzyme stuff from pets at home.

Get some enzyme cleaner - it's designed to break down the urine itself. If you don't use it, puppy will still be able to smell the wee and will think it's a good place to go for a wee.

Don't use puppy pads either - they just teach puppy that it's ok to go indoors.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_doghouse has lots of knowledgeable sorts :)

I’m particularly interested in what people use on their wood flooring. Also, I think it’s slightly different for dogs than humans as a dog will want to wee of it has smelt where it went before.

I've never bothered with the enzyme stuff on hard floors, just pick/blot up poo/wee with kitchen roll. Then spray generously with anti bacterial spray and wrote with kitchen roll, repeat as necessary.

I bought some hard floor cleaner for dogs from Pets at Home. (We have had our pup 2 weeks now) Seems to do the trick.

I really recommend joining the Facebook 'Dog training Advice and Support' group... incredibly useful information and a ton of files to read that really help. (first timers here too!)

Thanks Stillmedusa and ride. I have joined that fb group too. Thanks

How is it going with you puppy?

Now I’m just trying to decide what to do about crate training?

We used a crate, and it was fine. It was her safe place and where I knew she was safe home alone without chewing electric cables. Gradually weaned off it as she got better behaved.
Good luck, it's hard work spotting those 'about to wee' moments and rushing them outside!! (But so worth it when you have a new best friend you love as much as the DCs)
Do enrol in training classes - it helps both of you!

Have no advice. I don't do puppies.
I only coo at themGrin
Just came on to say "Awwwwwwwww and congratulate you on your new fur baby and. To remind you that puppy photos are mandatory

We have decided not to crate.. or rather, not to enforce use. We have one and Orla does nap in it but even with treats and all in there she was very unhappy when we shut the door...the couple of nights I tried it I ended up on the floor next to her
I spent some time really reading about it, and feel that for us it is not essential. She will be crated in the car for travel..she's already used to that in a smaller travel crate, if she is ill enough to need it at the vets I hope she will also be sedated enough not to care.just like a nap.
She's a breed that is very human dependent and I was happy for my children to sleep near me if they needed to and I feel the same way about my puppy.
The first week I slept on the sofa and she slept by my feet (ignoring all nice bedding!) Then gradually I started to move upstairs , but my DD's bedroom is downstairs and left it open so Orla could go there if she wanted...first few nights she did, then she didn't bother and now I go to bed and she stays downstairs (can't come up because of the cats)
I stay up til midnight.. take her out for a last wee and she is going through to about 6.30 am ..no accidents! She's quite a big puppy tho so I guess she has a decent bladder capacity.
So far it has been relatively easy. She turns into a baby shark at times, but we give her a chewy toy and she chomps that :D She does sit and down on command (and it's very cute!)

So far she hasn't chewed anything she shouldn't... she has tons of toys to chomp on (and she LOVES the pets at Home 'roadkill' squirrel that squeaks and crinkles.

I am however utterly knackered! It's such a steep learning curve!!!!!

We NEED a photo StillMedusa or at least to know what breed she is!
