Eco Washing powder/liquid

Boring thread alert.

I want to switch from my regular washing stuff to something less harmful to the environment, now that eco products seem to be more widely available.

The ones I’ve tried so far just haven’t got my washing as clean as the Ariel liquitabs I’ve used for years, which is disappointing. Any recommendations? I’ve tried Ecover Zero and Method Concentrated Laundry Detergent. Thanks.

Anyone in a laundry mood this evening?

I use all kinds of products made by the people: biodegradable.biz/shop/laundry/

I've been trialling Smol gel tabs, you can get a pack to try with a £1 postage, they are delivered through the letterbox and work out how many you need depending on how many washes you do. I like them but its just me and DH, I don't have huge amounts of laundry and the most it has to deal with is DH's sports kit!

I’ve been using smol washing capsules and dishwasher tabs for ages - they’re fab.

MyOtherProfile · 30/07/2019 20:14

We have found these to be very good and eco friendly.

Another vote for Smol here - they're really great!

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/07/2019 20:16

We use Splosh. Very happy with it, and their fabric softener.

mrwalkensir · 30/07/2019 20:16

yep- ecoballs or similar are great, and for most stuff you can just do a quick wash eg 15 minutes as you're not having to rinse a load of soap out. winwin

BostonFern · 30/07/2019 20:19

Another vote for the ecoegg here

HMArsey · 30/07/2019 20:19

Another splosh user here, we use pretty much their whole range.

I just can’t see how the Eco Egg can be effective. My dc are filthy beasts, and they have to wear white polo shirts and socks for school. Those who use it - does it really get serious muck and food stains out?

We have been using the eco egg for almost a year. Absolutely no complaints and my kids are really sporty so lots of muddy kits to wash. We do have the eco egg stain remover for tough stuff but we only use it on the same kind of stains I would use a stain remover for when I used to use washing liquid.

TapasForTwo · 30/07/2019 23:11

I used eco eggs for a while, and ended up with a stinky washing machine, and my daughter's eczema got worse.

Use powder rather than liquid as laundry liquid isn't very good for the washing machine. I always got on with Ecover powder.

Padiana · 30/07/2019 23:58

I used Ecover for a long while, but formulations (and perfumes) were changed a year or two ago and I then found I was getting regular bouts of thrush when I used it to wash my underwear. Now just use a small amount of own-brand regular washing powder, with no softener.

MyOtherProfile · 31/07/2019 06:23

I don't know that you can blame the eco egg for worse eczema since there's nothing in them.

No stinky machine here but then I've run vinegar and bicarb through my machine once a month for years, whatever I've been using.

houseofrabbits · 31/07/2019 06:40

I've been using soap nuts for years, no problems at all! I do still use the occasional bit of vanish on stubborn stains and an occasional bit of anti bacterial laundry liquid in some washes.

NannyR · 31/07/2019 06:56

I've used an ecoegg and wasn't impressed at all. My clothes looked clean (but I suspect they would look as clean in a plain water wash) but after a few washed the "clean linen" fragrance wore off (not really a problem - I don't like heavily scented laundry), but the clothes started to have a really weird, musty almost damp smell which was still noticeable when they were dry. My washing machine is very clean so it couldn't be that.

MyOtherProfile · 31/07/2019 07:00

I must admit I was dubious about the eggs and expected a musty smell. It was dh who first bought them and I warned him we would go back to wash stuff at the first hint of musty smell. Still no smell so going strong. You do need to get the clothes out of the machine straight away though and not leaving them sitting in it til you get home from work, like we used to.

theneverendinglaundry · 31/07/2019 07:04

I haven't found anything yet that a) works and b) is affordable. I use Splosh's other products but find their washing powder pricey. Haven't tried Smol because I don't like capsules, I prefer to be able to choose my dosage.

So for now, I'm using regular powder, which eases my conscience slightly as it's in a cardboard box.

TapasForTwo · 31/07/2019 08:55

MyOther most washing powders contain bleach which kills off mould and inhibits mould growth. I ended up using some Ariel powder to get rid of the smell (after getting good advice on MN) and a happy side effect was that DD's eczema disappeared.

It was the mould in the washing machine that aggravated it.

Nsky · 15/12/2019 13:38

Been using bio d, plus Ecover stain remover, and bio d laundry bleach as needed.
No issues, hate the pod idea

MitziK · 15/12/2019 14:19

Anybody got a suggestion for the eco friendly fabric softener nearest to Ecover's old Amongst the Flowers scent?

I absolutely detest the new, 'improved' ones and, together with their abandoning the camomile washing up liquid scent of my teens (it made bloody good shampoo as well when you were a skint student), I've been stuck with things that absolutely stink the place out ever since.

stripeypillowcase · 15/12/2019 14:24

I like ecover.
the products work and the company researches into farming method and sustainability.
