If someone offers to bring a salad

.... how many would you assume that salad will serve?

Having a dinnner party of 10. Friend is bringing 'a green salad', as a side for a pasta main. Should I make a second salad or assume one salad will be enough?

TIA for advice.

Presumably your friend knows 10 people will be there, So it would be a bit tight for them to turn up with enough salad for 4 people.

Don’t make another salad

dellacucina · 30/07/2019 14:20

I'd buy some backup salad ingredients and have them ready to go just in case. I would keep them hidden in the fridge unless needed.

BlingLoving · 30/07/2019 14:21

Ooh, my advice would be completely the opposite. If someone asks if they can bring something, I'd think they probably assume they are not the only one bringing something. So in this case, I'd bring a large salad, but wouldn't assume it's the only side dish and therefore needs to be sufficient for 10 generous portions. I'd assume that there'd be at least one other person bringing a side and that therefore it's enough for 10 small portions or 4-5 big portions.

Definitely make another salad. Or ask someone else to also bring one.

Just write and say "Hey, looks like there will be 10 of us at dinner x night. All ok on the salad front?" or whatever.

Teddybear45 · 30/07/2019 14:25

If she’s making a green salad then you could make a tomato / mozzerella one. Definitely do a spare.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/07/2019 14:25

I'd have a couple of bags of prepared rocket or whatever in the fridge, doesn't take a moment to toss that in a bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar which is all it needs.

Pipandmum · 30/07/2019 14:29

A green salad is pretty boring so I’d definitely do another salad with more variety.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 30/07/2019 16:21

I’d do a big dish of sliced beef tomatoes with finely sliced red onion, basil, rock salt, black pepper and balsamic.

PullingMySocksUp · 30/07/2019 16:26

I’d also do a separate different salad.

Nottobesoldseparately · 30/07/2019 16:32

I would have salad in my fridge anyway, as a matter of norm.

So, to chuck some pre prepared bags into a bowl would be no bother. I am also renowned for overcatering so my friends wouldn't be offended.

MrsGrindah · 30/07/2019 16:34

Anybody else thinking about Doris and the salad from Gavin and Stacey?!

CakeNinja · 30/07/2019 16:35

I normally have salad stuff in my fridge anyway but for this would put together a nice fresh tabbouleh or a tomato and red onion salad, maybe a Greek salad depending on what you’re having.

Loveislandaddict · 30/07/2019 16:38

I would do a second salad.

Atlasta · 30/07/2019 16:42

Have a lettuce and bag of spinach on standby to plump it up if it's a bit sparseGrin

bigchris · 30/07/2019 16:49

@MrsGrindah Grin Me!!!!!

Roussette · 30/07/2019 16:50

Bringing a salad - to me - is a bit more than opening a bag of mixed leaves, putting it in a bowl and calling it a green salad!

If someone offered to do a salad, I'd want a lot more than that! I can open my own bag of mixed leaves thank you Grin

If I 'take a salad' to someone's house, it's a vietnamese coleslaw or a blue cheese pasta salad or a greek salad with feta and mint. Something that shows you've made a bit of effort!

escapade1234 · 30/07/2019 16:53

“Oh, Doris, where’s the salad?”

SalitaeDiscesa · 30/07/2019 16:56

If people asked what they could bring, I used to say a salad.
I don't any more. Too many people turned up with bags of slimy, bitter pre-packed leaves 🙁

MrsGrindah · 30/07/2019 16:58

“ There’s your salad ! “

ErrolTheDragon · 30/07/2019 17:09

Surely it depends on what it's going to be accompanying. With many pastas, a fairly simple green salad is the most appropriate option. And if the guest doesn't bring enough that's what the OP would need more of.

I might chuck on some walnuts and maybe Parmesan shavings and/or baby plum tomatoes but nothing that would 'fight' the main dish.

Roussette · 30/07/2019 17:23

Unless the host specifically asked for a green salad, which takes nil effort, I would offer something more.

BlueCornsihPixie · 30/07/2019 17:24

But I wouldn't want a blue cheese pasta salad with pasta!

I would assume they are sensible a know that 10 people are coming and therefore their salad needs to feed 10 + room for extra

I would do a tomato salad as well tbh just in case

Aqueo517 · 30/07/2019 17:30

“Where’s the salad? Where’s the salad?” ✌🏻 “There’s the salad, now leave me alone”

Sorry I couldn’t resist!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/07/2019 17:33

Love the Gavin & Stacey 'salad' references, it's why I opened the thread. Grin

RedElephants · 30/07/2019 17:37

I had to google that, sorry don't watch a lot of television Grin
