Washing machine door seal......

Looks bloody awful! I've had the machine 9 years. In all honesty, I haven't exactly looked after it, I use it, it works. I clean it sometimes. I run it with the cleaning stuff in. Take the drawer out and scrub. The last 6 months though, the grey rubber door seal has suddenly become really gross! It looks like black mould except can't be scrubbed off.
Is there a way to get rid of it?

Do you leave the door open for the machine to dry out after after every wash?

I don't think I would like the thought of washing my clothes in all the mould to be honest.

Nah but you can buy a replacement for £20 and fitnit yourself

I do as much as I can, but I don't leave it open when the children are around. Yes I agree, that's why I'm asking really although I have bleached and scrubbed it, it's still there, so assume it's not contaminating the wash.

I thought about getting a new door seal, which was considerably more than £20 for my machine and when i looked on youtube for fitting instructions you pretty much had to dismantle the machine and I knew that sod's law meant that the machine would break within months of replacing the seal.

So this year, I thought 'sod it, it's 13 years old, it still works but it's noisy as hell, it jumps all over the kitchen on a spin cycle and the seal is all manky, I'll get a new machine' which I did.

BlueSkiesLies · 29/07/2019 22:39

@BarbaraofSeville did you check out the generic prices on one of the spares websites? Espares is good. I have replaced a few and usually £20-£30 for a non official brand one.

To be fair if you have an intergrated washing machine and tumble dryer they are a LOT harder to fit and I probably wouldn’t look to fit one of those myself again.

I can't remember but in reality it was DPs choice as he was the one complaining about the manky washing machine seal - he claimed it left streaks on his clothes but I never noticed any on mine, and it would have been him doing the work so he had the final vote and he agreed with my assertion that it was on it's last legs anyway so we should get a new machine, which is a revelation when you're used to the washing machine clattering about and chasing you round the kitchen.

The new one is so quiet, even on a spin cycle and doesn't move an inch.

I bought a replacement seal for the manky machine in my rented house, and luckily my friend fitted it for me because it did involve almost dismantling the whole machine and he swore a lot! Even he said he'd advise buying a new machine rather than do that again Grin

Oh crap. Hopes may be dashed!! I'll YouTube it.
