If you are losing weight what are you eating?

I'm hungry all the time, please give me some ideas! Today I've had a small omelette for breakfast with tomatoes.
Lunch was a big salad with prawns.
Dinner was gnocchi with green beans and sea bass.

But I'm still hungry so just had a few oatcakes with low fat cream cheese which probably wasnt great.

I have high blood sugar so have to try and avoid sugar and carbs. Did have gnocchi today though.

Also remember that your eyes are always bigger than your stomach.
Try a very small portion of food and wait 10 minutes before eating any more.
I think you'll find the small portion was enough.

PixieLumos · 30/07/2019 10:33

Your meals sound good to me - I would say don’t be afraid to up the portion sizes a bit if you’re still hungry - cutting snacks out is key I think, and if you’re still hungry it’s unlikely you’ll be able to resist temptation (keep some cherry tomatoes or carrot sticks handy for when you’re struggling.)

Nanechange3007 · 30/07/2019 10:34

Thank you. I don't really eat much meat, do eat fish.

OP you are starving exactly because of your high sugar. I know what it is like. You need to gradually, but determinedly, wean yourself off carbs and fill up on fats, protein and veg, in that order. Any amount you like, especially fats. Fasting is extremely effective, but it will be hard for you at the moment, as you are clearly carb dependent. Feelings of ravenous hunger is evidence of that. Since going low carb, I have not felt hunger. Even if I haven’t eaten for 6-7 hours. I don’t get hungry any more. Light-headed at most. It is fantastic, life-changing.

Counting calories isn’t going to work for you with raised insulin/blood sugar. You need a smarter approach. And there is no need to torture yourself, either.

Nanechange3007 · 30/07/2019 10:39

Thank you. What sort of things do you eat kingmidas? I had blueberries and yoghurt for breakfast and am now starving again. Its really hard.

16:8 has worked for me and DH too..he had a lot he wanted to lose and it fell off him! 2 stone in 3 months! I just maintain on it now and enjoy the fact I have got something to look forward to later in the day...

I know it sounds impossible and weird but embrace that slight hunger period as success. I religiously always had breakfast and now simply have breakfast later in the day. I just have cups of tea until lunchtime or later and really enjoy that late brekkie.

We've found it easier to finish eating as late as 9pm and then not eat (fast) until 1pm the next day or as late as you like. Hubby just drinks black coffee all day until after lunch, I have as many cups of tea with milk as I like until are lunch. HTH

Nanechange3007 · 30/07/2019 10:42

What was your blood sugar level, mine was 41.

Bananas are good if you're still feeling hungry in between meals. You're already having eggs for breakfast but try Greek / natural yoghurt and a banana then have a boiled egg later on - full of protein but low cal.

Bigbopboo · 30/07/2019 10:46

Another IF (16:8) fan here. Has been life changing for me

Crazyladee · 30/07/2019 10:52

Skipping breakfast and massively reducing portion sizes works for me. I've tried every diet under the sun and failed miserably. For me, I've learnt to keep it simple. Over complicated diet plans and banned foods don't work for me.

BazaarMum · 30/07/2019 10:55

Did you have full fat, greek yoghurt? Because you NEED the fat. Low fat yoghurts are basically just lactose, which is sugar.

Whole foods are essential if you have blood sugar problems.

Sweetners are also a disaster for people with blood sugar issues. Your body prepares for a sugar spike that doesn’t come, so can still mess with your blood chemistry.

Nanechange3007 · 30/07/2019 11:00

Yes. I always have full fat yoghurt

This thread alone shows how people can get so confused about dieting. So many contradicting choices! 😂

KingMidasAteMidges · 30/07/2019 11:26

Yes, I know exactly how hard it is. I used to have to munch on something every 2-3 hours or I couldn’t think think straight or function. People who tell you to ignore some mild hunger got no clue. But, it can be sorted with knowledge, time and patience 💐

My typical day over the last couple of years:

Breakfast at 10-11am
omelette with 3 eggs
OR tomato and mozzarella (2 small rolls or 1 big one, 2 big tomatoes)
2 strong cups of tea with full fat milk. No sugar (no sugar full stop really)

This will comfortably take me to 5pm meal.

Dinner 5-6pm
Three marinated chicken thighs roasted in the oven with veggies. Full plate, as much as you need.

This will take me to 10-11pm when I have 3 boiled eggs sprinkled with salt and pepper, maybe some coleslaw or leftover roasted veg.

I go to bed around midnight.

It is easy to mistake a feeling of thirst for hunger. So I always have a cup of tea first, 9/10 it fixes it. Drink plenty throughout the day, plain water flavoured with a bit of lemon is best, but also herbal teas, or normal tea with full fat milk. If in doubt, have a drink.

Try and research metabolic syndrome and insulin link with obesity to understand the WHY behind your dietary choices and timing of meals. In a nutshell, the worst thing you can do is graze all day, it never gives your already high insulin a chance to go down. So, 2-3 big filling meals a day with plenty of fat, no snacks or bites in between. PLENTY of drink. Strictly no sugar, no compromise at all on this one.

Good luck!

Nanechange3007 · 30/07/2019 11:26

Yup. I am totally confused!

The thought of never having chocolate again is very sad!

OP posts:
Dowser · 30/07/2019 11:34

It’s what Im not eating

Strictly gluten free, no wheat, oats, rye, barley products, malt, maltodextrin, nothing with lactose.

The bloating has almost gone and slowly the weight is shifting
I’m 4 weeks in.

Dowser · 30/07/2019 11:39

I have dark chocolate. Thing is I don’t crave it as I’ve upped my magnesium

Every day I have
Breakfast 2 egg omelette with spinach
Later..2 small oranges

Lunch..my favourite meal of the day..3 rice cakes, with dark Belgian chocolate topping and a banana mashed on it

Dinner..veg, protein and a carb
Last night was two Aldi gluten free burgers, broccoli and sweet potato

Drink lots of water and herb teas
Occasionally I’ll have an alcoholic drink...maybe once a month

Dowser · 30/07/2019 11:43

I’m never having gluten again..
Just one stray off this path and I’ll be very poorly again
No, there’s no turning back now

It’s a bigger problem than most people realise.
My ibs is hugely better. Dh sinuses so much better.
We’re expecting our bodies to be so much better by Christmas

Doodleoodleday · 30/07/2019 11:43

A pan of homemade vegetable soup can be good to have on if you feel hungry have a mug. I think grains a good for a Salad keep me fuller longer - I like bulgar wheat

KingMidasAteMidges · 30/07/2019 11:53

Gosh OP, 41 is high blood sugar. With a reading like that I would be giving fruit a wide birth for a while, too. Ignore people who tell you to eat a banana for a snack, they are choka full of sugar 😮

Your angst about not having anything sweet is a tell-tale sign. Craving carbs is purely physiological: because of high insulin, your cells would have pared-down insulin receptors as an adaptive mechanism. Due to smaller number of receptors, cell fuel (glucose) isn’t getting in as it should, so cells of your body are literally starving. Hence the desperate responses, like extreme hunger and a penchant for foods that deliver quick abundant glucose to the blood stream, I.e. sugars and simple carbs. Not your fault! but you can help yourself out of it. Understand what is happening and why, what consequences your actions will have on your body and make an informed choice. Sugar in your tea is not worth the insuing havoc. You are in the grips of it at the moment, but you can come out of this dark place. Time and patience. Reduce sugar, slowly but doggedly. Cold turkey if it is easier for you (I couldn’t, took me about 9 months). But you will reach a place where you will not feel hungry any more, you will be indifferent to sugar, chocolate and cake. And feel great for it!

I have got a bar of dark chocolate sitting in the pantry, been there nearly 2 months and I got no desire to touch it. I can now watch DH polishing a tub of icecream in the evening and feel nothing, not a slightest urge to taste it. Sugar doesn’t move me any more, I don’t want it. I didn’t think it was ever possible. But it is. And the feeling is fantastic!!!

Nanechange3007 · 30/07/2019 11:56

Thank you that is encouraging the last dr spoke to said 41 wasnt too bad!
