what's the nicest, plainest gin that doesn't break the bank?
preferably available in a supermarket.

I'm not keen on weird botanicals

Gordons! It always stands up well in taste tests and is the taste of your childhood (or is that just me?)

DrPimplePopper · 29/07/2019 21:02

I like Bloom or if I want to splurge, Hendricks. I'm not a fan of all the exotic spices or botanical flavours either

Lidl do a brilliant one called Hortus London dry gin which is great.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2019 21:07

Vodka.

Or you might want to look at the tonic you're drinking because sometimes, it's the tonic people don't like not the gin.

But to answer your question, Hortus is lovely, but I think it does actually taste quite 'ginny' which might not be what you want.

Aldi's Gordon's look a like always gets good reviews and is a couple of quid cheaper than the real thing and quite inoffensive.

Ivegotthree · 29/07/2019 21:11

Aldi own brand gin always wins the awards

orangeshoebox · 29/07/2019 21:21

thanks all.
will have a look at aldi.

my 'tonic' of choice is lemon balm cordial with sparking water.
vodka doesn't have the medicine like perfume ime.

Co-op's own is nice.

Bonkerz · 29/07/2019 21:32

Can't beat Bombay sapphire with a posh traditional lemonade or even a dandelion and burdock. Yummy.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2019 21:40

That's the one I was thinking of. Bombay Sapphire. I couldn't think of the name apart from 'what's the one in the blue bottle that people say is gin for people who don't like gin'.

whiteroseredrose · 29/07/2019 21:41

Was also going to say Aldi. They do a great alternative to Fever Tree tonic too

Ilovesweatybollocks · 29/07/2019 22:12

As already suggested Aldi do a nice gin. I cut up a few fresh strawberries and add them before I put the tonic in, adds a hint of flavour and nice to eat them when you've finished

AuntieStella · 29/07/2019 22:16

Waitrose own brand

namechangeninjaevervigilant · 29/07/2019 22:19

yuck to Bombay Sapphire. I agree that it doesn’t taste like gin and I love the taste of gin.

Tesco London Dry is nice, a classic gin flavour and Lidl or Aldi do a Cromwell Gin which is very nice.

DrFoxtrot · 29/07/2019 22:29

Yes to Lidl Hortus suggested above!

QueenofLouisiana · 29/07/2019 23:15

Hendricks, but not if you like lemon with it (cucumber is better with Hendricks). Gordons is never a bad choice (I like the pink one too, but that’s not a plain gin).

GloriaSnockers · 29/07/2019 23:18

Lidl Hortus

fussychica · 30/07/2019 09:02

Aldi is good if you don't want to spend £20 plus. I use my supermarket to checkout where my favourites are on offer as I love Martin Miller's, Caorunn and Tanquery 10 but they are £££.
Aldi special selection tonic is a steal but not always in stock. Their standard one is not good.

Blobby10 · 30/07/2019 09:37

Another vote here for the LIdl Hortus range! I love their citrus one Grin

WonkyDonk87 · 30/07/2019 10:02

Martin Miller's for a great all rounder. Clean, crisp, actually tastes like gin (not like its had a pound of sweets poured in it). Available in Tesco etc

Abhann · 30/07/2019 11:12

Boyle's Premium Irish Craft gin, which is made for Aldi by the makers of Blackwater gin, and is excellent, and not one of those sharp, dusky-botanicals styles.
