Favourite town in Yorkshire?

RafaelAndJane · 29/07/2019 18:08

Okay, blatantly stolen this thread idea from the best village in Yorkshire thread. However, I'm fantasizing about my new (single) life and I'd really like recommendations.

My ideal wish list would be:

A lovely town with plenty of shops and pubs
Very touristy (because I'd like to house swap for holidays)

Ideally within an hour's drive of Manchester
Good rail links or connections to places like Leeds, Manchester, York, etc.
Lots of pretty options for dog walks
Friendly and welcoming community
A WI and/or options for groups like book clubs, classes, etc.
Dog friendly pubs.

I'm 48, (will be) single, no children, one dog. I freelance so I'll need good broadband.

I only need a teeny tiny 1 bedroom place, but it needs to be picturesque so it's appealing to house swappers going on holiday. Budget £170k.

Help me feed my fantasy please! Does such an oasis exist?? Grin

What..so you pull a face at believing I'd recommended the town as fitting the criteria and yet you're also unhappy at believing I'd 'poked fun at it'. You've clearly got out of the wrong side of the bed today, hope you have a better day tomorrow.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/07/2019 18:54

I really like Beverly but I have absolutely no idea how long the train takes to Manchester.

Or indeed how expensive property is there.

It’s very nice though.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 30/07/2019 18:58

No I didn't think it was a serious recommendation. You were obviously taking the piss, either out of the OP or the place (it's difficult to tell based on text alone). But you now seem to be extrapolating from a smiley to be judging my state of mind. Maybe you should give yourself a little head tilt eh?

Bluesheep8 · 30/07/2019 19:02

hoppingreen what was the thread called about the woman moving to Marsden please?

Sagradafamiliar · 30/07/2019 19:03

I could never be the sort of person who does a mumsnet head tilt. What next, 'did you mean to be so rude's and tinkly laughs? I can't think of anything fucking worse. Take my light hearted ambiguous comment, couple it with your offensive notion that I had ill intent and shove it up your professionally offended behind.

Hoppinggreen · 30/07/2019 19:48

blue I can’t remember the thread exactly but she was asking about Marsden and Slaithwaite as she needed rural but easy access to Manchester
I saw her again a few weeks ago asking about rentals in Marsden and I asked her and she said she had moved there

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 30/07/2019 20:04

And you were the one asking if I got out of the wrong side of the bed...

Grinchly · 30/07/2019 20:06

Hebden Bridge.

azulmariposa · 30/07/2019 20:08

Whitby!

Grinchly · 30/07/2019 20:10

@BikeRunSki
That's simply not true re recovery from floods
Do you live there and want to put off the offcumdens with scare stories?GrinGrinGrin
There is massive investment in flood prevention measures In Mytholmroyd. Clearly don't buy a property that flooded but most did not.

BikeRunSki · 30/07/2019 20:35

Grinchky, no I don’t live there, I am a civil engineer and part of the EA Flood Risk Management team for West Yorkshire, and have had some (albeit limited) involvement in the Mytholmroyd scheme. I don’t want to scare people of course not, I do want to raise awareness of the long term impact of flooding to people who may be unfamiliar with it.

Hoppinggreen · 30/07/2019 20:53

The main road through Hebden Bridge flooded yesterday !!
Trains were suspended for a bit as well
I don’t live there either by the way

Sugarplumfairy65 · 30/07/2019 20:55

Have a good look at Marsden.
Good rail links to Manchester, house prices are good, the village has some lovely shops and pubs.
It has a great community, they hold the jazz festival there every autumn, lots of tv filming goes on in the area too.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 30/07/2019 21:01

Oh, and the dog walking in the Colne Valley is great. You can walk along the canal towpath from Marsden to Linthwaite. The people in the area are very friendly

historysock · 31/07/2019 05:57

I grew up not far form Hathersage. It's easy to get into Sheffield for shops and Manchester (but why would you want Manchester when you could go to Sheffield really? Grin)
It does have a lovely lido too.

historysock · 31/07/2019 06:01

Bake well or Matlock Bath for Touristy..,

wowfudge · 31/07/2019 07:55

Bakewell and Matlock are in Derbyshire.

"Hmmm the problem I have is fear of the unknown and making huge changes all at once. My family, friends, book club, etc ate in Manchester. I've lived here all my life. And part of me is itching for something different, and the other part is clinging to what I know. I'll be on my own, having spent 20 years in a marriage. I know it's a bit pathetic, but I felt comfortable with the one hour away thing. But truthfully, I freelance, it will be just me and a dog, so in theory I could go anywhere."

Woah, this is a big change and huge props to you for making it! I just want to come back on this and say: think carefully about this, and maybe rent for a bit before you buy. I know two moves are a right hassle, but you need to get this right for you - the last thing you want is to be trapped in a place that looked ideal on the surface but was very far from it in practice. The idea of a place and the reality can sometimes be very different.

You don't say what you do freelance - if you're out and about meeting people, living in a village might work well for you. But if you're largely sat at home in an office, you might want to think quite carefully whether a small community is right. You might be better off in one of the suburbs of the cities where you can get to excellent countryside in a matter of 10 minute, but where you are also close to coworking spaces where you can meet likeminded people and develop networks if you are fed up with being at home. There are parts of Sheffield that look and feel like a village, but with all of the advantages of a city within a stone's throw (good hospitals, good transport links, good shops and restaurants).

wowfudge · 31/07/2019 14:29

Given my last comment I'm a bit Hmm at myself, but what about Hayfield in Derbyshire? It's got pubs and restaurants, good transport links, easy access to stunning countryside, etc.

willstarttomorrow · 02/08/2019 01:01

OP you need to be in Leeds. Lots of areas of the city are quite rural and are their own little village or town. Best of both worlds.

£170k in an area that people will want to house swap?

LikeDolphinsCanSwin · 02/08/2019 03:14
