Southern Spain August suncream after dinner?

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 29/07/2019 17:10

We are going to Southern Spain in a couple of weeks and I’ve just remembered the ‘discussions’ I had last year with DH around suncream!

Say you have dinner until 8pm and then spend a good 2 hours walking around the town/seafront with no shade. Would you apply suncream to the children? The solar midday is 2.30pm I believe. Obviously still very warm and sunny at 8pm.

According to the Met Office, UV in Malaga at 8pm will be low, so no. No more sun cream after dinner.

lopdedop · 29/07/2019 17:37

It's dark by 9.30pm...

leafinthewind · 29/07/2019 17:39

Though, to be fair, that's 8pm our time which is 9pm in Spain. So there will be an hour of medium UV exposure from 8pm until 9pm. Meh. I still wouldn't suncream the kids again.

Nope

leafinthewind · 29/07/2019 17:41

Scratch that. It's actually 8pm Spanish time. UV is low. Don't put suncream on. Who wants to put sticky suncreamy kids to bed? Not me.

Expressedways · 29/07/2019 17:43

No, the UV index will be really low and then it will get dark. On holiday we typically have showers before dinner and wouldn’t bother reapplying sunscreen after that.

WaitingForAGovernment · 29/07/2019 17:46

If you download the DarkSky app, it will tell you what the UV is. Below 5 and falling, I don’t suncream, unless we are on the water or in another situation that increases the risk.

Blankiefan · 29/07/2019 19:09

Yes - but I appreciate I'm on the risk adverse side when it comes to the sun.

I'd do a quick layer on exposed parts. (I usually do a head-to-toe Factor 50 cover twice per day : even under UV suits)

TheFaerieQueene · 29/07/2019 19:12

Perhaps follow the Spanish way and eat at 10!

fussychica · 29/07/2019 19:40

No. Lived there for 8 years, don't remember ever catching the sun sitting out post dinner. DS was never creamed up in the evening. I could never get into eating quite as late as 10pm, about 9 was my limit. DS once came home about 10pm when I was expecting home in the early hours. He said he was starving as none of his Spanish friends wanted to eat until later and he got fed up waiting so had come home to eat!

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 31/07/2019 21:47

There will be no post dinner suncream applied. Will report back with findings. Good luck pasty child.

I live in Spain, and if I’m going to be in the sun (even the evening sun) I’d put suncream on or at least make sure shoulders, arms etc are covered. The Greenwich meridian runs through the east coast of Spain so our clock time in summer is two hours ahead of the “real” sun time, ie where the sun is in the sky, so 8pm is really 6pm. You can still burn. I wouldn’t risk it with a child’s skin if they’re of northern European heritage. Also intrigued as to where you’ll be having dinner prior to 20:00 Grin

Brittany2019 · 31/07/2019 22:52

I live in the South of France and I’ve never heard of anyone eating dinner in the sun. WTF?

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 01/08/2019 21:52

We won’t be eating dinner IN the sun. Merely going back out in the sun AFTER dinner.

All Inclusive hotel. Small children. Dinner starts 7pm. We will be there. Sunny walk after and a run on the beach ready for said pasty children to do MINI DISCO TIME!!! Veo Veo...
