Throw dinner in bin??

Lasagne cooking in the oven. I glanced at the packet as I was making the white sauce and saw a tiny dot of a creature crawling on side. Assume it to be a weevil. It was a fresh unopened packet of flour when I got it from cupboard but dated August.. So had been in their a while. I poured a bit into a bowl and couldn't see anything crawling. I found an open packet of flour in same cupboard dated 2018 Blush. I'm assuming that was the source. Everything from cupboard is now thrown out.

But there is a lasagne cooking in the oven. Do I let DC eat it as they have no idea? Or is that awful?

Internet tells me they aren't harmful but is it too grim?

Oh just eat it. Extra protein

FredaFrogspawn · 29/07/2019 16:06

I’m sure most our bread and shop cakes have had a big or two in them

Just don't tell them or they will refuse to eat it

BiddyPop · 29/07/2019 16:09

I’ve had that happen before. Everything went in the bin, including that nights dinner. Only DH and I though at the time so takeaway was easy.

When I cleaned out the cupboards, thoroughly cleaning them down with hot soapy water, I replaced my flour etc in a big supermarket shop, but have stored all those types of dry goods in sealed plastic or glass canisters ever since.

I had read the info about them not being harmful, but couldn’t stomach it myself.

BiddyPop · 29/07/2019 16:09

And I could afford to bin it all

NeverGotMyPuppy · 29/07/2019 16:12

I would eat it! Just dont tell anyone!

gotthefaceon · 29/07/2019 16:15

I've binned everything from one cupboard. Need to read if that's enough.

Because it was a tiny dot it didn't feel too bad. I wimped out of looking in the offending bad of flour because it might have put me off eating anything with flour again.

I found a bug in a piece of fruit as a kid and couldn't enjoy fresh fruit/veg for years.

I can afford to ditch the lasagne, just wasted time I guess.

I would eat it. You saw one bug in another bag of flour, and anything in there will have been baked to smithereens surely? Maybe I'm just gross but I wouldn't worry!

gotthefaceon · 29/07/2019 16:22

Ok. I think responses mean I don't feel too bad feeding it to DC. It's looking and smelling good.

Eat it, pretend you didn't see it. It was only (bad) luck that you happened to notice it at all.

tinyvulture · 29/07/2019 16:25

It’s been cooked - it’ll be fine.
I wouldn’t have binned everything from the cupboard either - but I accept that I am quite scummy......

Lexilooo · 29/07/2019 17:47

Oh just eat it! It really won't do anyone any harm

TheQueef · 29/07/2019 17:50

Whatever went in with the lasagne is certainly dead now and had a good sendoff.
Eat without guilt.

gotthefaceon · 29/07/2019 17:51

I definitely can't eat it but children enjoyed it.

Try it out on husband😊

ShirleyPhallus · 29/07/2019 17:53

Love that no-one is squeamish about eating dead cow but won’t eat a tiny, well cooked bug Grin

PancakeAndKeith · 29/07/2019 17:53

Please say you didn’t throw out the tins etc from that cupboard, just packet stuff.

BarbedBloom · 29/07/2019 17:53

Actually if you wouldn't eat it then I think it is a bit off to give it to your children

CassandraCross · 29/07/2019 18:04

Having lived in countries where weevils were a regular occurrence I learnt that the only surefire way to prevent them is to keep flour and similar products in the fridge or freezer.

gotthefaceon · 29/07/2019 18:09

I do wish I hadn't spotted it. Lasagne is a favourite and it looks like a good one.

Barbed that was my dilemma. But it's difficult for me to judge. I don't eat meat for squeamish reasons but feed it to my children. I'm unlikely to eat anything tonight because it grossed me out. So I needed a more balanced view.

It was a baking cupboard and the ingredients are all value branded generally so not expensive, obviously the waste isn't ideal.
