Buying second hand items for baby

Windthebobbinalready · 29/07/2019 15:40

I really want to get DD a jumperoo or other bouncer type thing but can’t afford it brand new.

DH isn’t keen on buying second hand but she plays with toys that have been used at baby groups etc.

Other than there not being any instructions (although I can’t see that being an issue?) is there something I’m missing? Surely it’s all fine to get second hand baby stuff?

Nothing wrong with it at all - plastic items can be sprayed with anti-bac and fabric items probably washed. You might find the instructions online.

It's better for the environment too to buy second hand 👍

Emelene · 29/07/2019 15:44

Why doesn't your DH want to buy second hand? Babies use things for such a short time. We got our jumperoo for free and it's in great condition, my daughter adores it.

lipslovelylips · 29/07/2019 15:44

Go for it, just scrub it down and for how long she will actually use it for, it's not worth paying full price.

And she may not even like it after you've forked out 100 quid!

EssentialHummus · 29/07/2019 15:44

Much better to buy things like that used, or borrow from a toy library. They use them for a short time, may not like it, and it’s expensive new.

Fuzzyspringroll · 29/07/2019 16:21

We got lots second-hand when DS was young. It's a reason why he had mountains of clothes. :)

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 29/07/2019 16:25

Jumparoos are not worth their brand new price, they are so expensive! We bought one for £25, it's in great condition and DS will not be using it for too much longer, there's always 2nd hand ones available in our local group!

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 29/07/2019 16:27

Definitely get 2nd hand, they use stuff for about 4 months and brand new is crazy prices.
Google your nearest NCT Nearly New Sales as they're often fantastic condition for much cheaper.

mrsed1987 · 29/07/2019 16:28

I paid 30 for my little ones jumperoo from facebook. Its brand new condition

Rockbird · 29/07/2019 16:28

Definitely get things second hand. There are so many things around these days and it's so easy to buy them that it's daft to buy them new.

Mintypea5 · 29/07/2019 16:29

Definitely 2nd hand! Only things I wouldn't get are cot mattresses and car seats.

I paid £10 for my jumperoo and it's in great condition. I wouldn't have paid full price tho

TheWashingMachine · 29/07/2019 16:30

Tell him not to be so precious with the exceotion of new shoes everything in our house is second hand and in some cases antique.

Pipandmum · 29/07/2019 16:31

I got tons of stuff second hand. The only thing to not get second hand is a car seat, unless you know for sure it’s never been in an accident. Kids don’t know the difference!

wibs77 · 29/07/2019 16:48

We could afford new stuff but I chose to save the money and bought a lot from facebook marketplace. I have managed to resell most stuff for very little difference. Most items are great condition and you can remove the soft part of the jumperoo and put it in the machine.

girlofthenorth · 29/07/2019 16:54

Most of my baby stuff was second hand - less expensive and much better for environment!

Windthebobbinalready · 29/07/2019 17:05

Thanks all!

Just hoping I can find one cheap enough now.

My local NCT doesn’t have any upcoming sales sadly!

@Windthebobbinalready try FB selling sites too

Marlena1 · 29/07/2019 18:14

I bought a brand new one; dd never used and I could only get €25 online. Absolutely second hand is the way to go.

Passthecherrycoke · 29/07/2019 18:16

My husband won’t have anything second hand. Will your husband actually change his mind?

WhiteVixen · 29/07/2019 18:16

Absolutely buy second hand. They are not worth paying full price for. The fabric seat can be removed and washed, all other bits can be wiped down, as everyone else has already said.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 29/07/2019 18:17

Honestly apart from his car seat and along the vast majority of DS's stuff is second hand..why worsen landfill?

BertieBotts · 29/07/2019 18:21

Facebook marketplace will have one.

Can you afford not to?? I would be bankrupt if I'd got everything for either of my kids brand new!

Lunafortheloveogod · 29/07/2019 18:34

I got a new one for £35 on a lightening deal on amazon?

2nd hand ones were £25 ish n then a taxi 😂. Check on eBay some sellers keep boxes and everything.

They’re never in anything long enough to spend a fortune on. Our pram is 2nd hand n I’ve had so many compliments on it, barely looked used bar the wheels.. and well logic said id wear down tread anyway
