Making a wet UK holiday more fun...

We are going away at the end of this week, staying in the UK and weather doesn't look amazing.

Since I said to my husband 'same hard work, different location' he's been a bit down about the whole thing, I probably should've kept it to myself, he'll find out in time!

Anyway, with a 1 and 3 year old, what can we take or do to make it a bit more exciting that just sleeping somewhere else?

Any particular games or traditions you can recommend, just anything to make it feel a bit more 'holiday' thank you

I was going to say “bowling and cinema”, but 1 and 3 are s but young for that!

Where are you going-ish? Then people can suggest local attractions rather than generic ideas.

Any swimming pools with toddler slides for the older one whilst the younger one is with either you or dh?

We always gets new dvd for holidays.
We order a supermarket delivery, but get posh versions of what we’d normally get (mainly for the adults), and nice breakfast stuff - croissants rather than toast.

Plenty of waterproofs for all and go out anyway!

A new game - Orchard Games are great for preschoolers. Incy Wincy and Shopping List were favourites.

Local museums are good for an hour or 2. Many places have a small esoteric museum about the local industry, author etc.

If you are going to Devin/Cornwall, the big aquarium in Plymouth is excellent. especially fun since we arrived by boat!

Swimming is our main holiday thing, and we tend to let them stay up a bit later than normal, give them tea in front of the telly, and then DH and I eat later.

Whereabouts are you staying?

We went caravanning in June with ds3 and the weather was awful. We found soft play, train and bus rides were good. But the best thing we found was that the holiday parks nearby did day entry - we got to use all the facilities - great swimming pools, indoor play areas, arcades. The swimming was by far the biggest hit and really made the holiday. Whereabouts are you going?

We’ve just been up in rainy Bamburgh and the forecast was just wrong! We ended up with 2 sunny days, one rainy, rather than the 3 terrible days forecast.

When our children were that little we used to visit local attractions, we’d take raincoats and dig on the beach even if raining. We’d also take it in turns to have a day to ourselves, DH would often go and fish i’d have a massage or just mooch around the shops.

Kids won't be too bothered by the weather.

Go tot he beach, they'll have fun even if there's drizzle. Just wrape them up and keep the hot chocolates coming!

Aquarium? Both Brighton and Bournemouth have good ones.

Local leisure centre pool? The 3 year old will enjoy it especially if it has slightly different slides/sprinklers from your local pool.

Where and what are you staying in?

Walks in the rain are great fun, if you are dressed appropriately.

Treasure hunts. Both nature and sweets.

Local markets, charity shops, deli shops.

Picnics

Beaches, arcades, museums, rivers, play grounds.

Tire the kids out with fresh air, then you and DH get to relax with a drink and a dvd, music, games

Thanks very much everyone. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I wrote this post at the beginning of the week, but I didn't mention the 14 year old twins as I assumed they would not need entertainment???

I'm not sure what I was thinking, actually think these will be harder work than the little ones to entertain!!
