Children's books/TV with a transformation portal (Lion Witch W)

Can anyone recommend any children's books or TV shows with a transformation portal where characters go to a particular location or through someone that leads to another world or another experience.

I've got Lion Witch Wardrobe (the wardrobe to Narnia), Harry Potter (the train at Kings X). I know of older TV series like Mr Benn (shop changing room) but is there anything more modern?

Or any other books?

Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer - time travelling triggered by sleeping in a particular bed.
Tom's Midnight Garden by Phillipa Pearce - not a portal but a clock that strikes 13

I'm sure I should be able to think of lots more...

Rebecca's World by Terry Nation. My absolute favourite book from my childhood...

Alice in Wonderland - down the rabbit hole.
The Phantom Tollbooth - through the tollbooth!
Jack and the Beanstalk

Haven't read them in years but I think the Magic Faraway Tree also has a portal? The children certainly visit magical lands but can't remember how the tree gets them there.

TV Show - not strictly for children (although preteen would be fine) but in Once Upon A Time they are always portalling around via mirrors and magic beans, whirlpools, etc.

Not modern but Moondial fits that description. Book and TV series.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 29/07/2019 14:01

More timeslip than physical portal (although the same could be said for Charlotte Sometimes and Tom's Midnight Garden above), but Traveller in Time, The Little White Horse, and Green Knowe?

Elidor by Alan Garner.
Teenagers ‘Neverwhere’ by Neil Gaiman

ArtichokeAardvark · 29/07/2019 14:03

Another one - Stravaganza. The main character portals to 18th century Venice via a notebook.

Ooh, The Library series by Genevieve Cogman! There's a magical library with doors to thousands of different worlds. Aimed at older children again.

I'm enjoying this, will keep thinking!

nillygin · 29/07/2019 14:07

Gwynewth Rees- The Magic Princess Dress, and the rest of that series has magic mirrors to pass into other worlds.

Great books for an audience of 6-8year old girls.

Jack Stalwart - a book series where the boy is a secret agent and he gets transported through a map to different parts of the world to complete his missions. Sounds ridiculous by they're really good!

Time hunters series - books where a boy is sent back in time to all different eras to fund amulets. It's not so much a portal but rather a tornado like wind which whips him through time.

Moondial is a fantastic book
Charlotte Sometimes

Another one that I can’t remember the title but is on my shelf at home and I’ll find it when I get back Grin

museumum · 29/07/2019 14:12

The secret garden? Sort of.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 29/07/2019 14:27

The Story of the Amulet by E. Nesbit.
The Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix.
There's one called Follow me Down where a boy slips through time in the basement of an old house. Can't remember who wrote it offhand.

coragreta · 29/07/2019 14:34

The magic faraway tree. New world every few chapters.

MrsNai · 29/07/2019 14:50

The Weirdstone of Brisingamen: A Tale of Alderley - really scary children's show too
Not just for children- A Christmas Carol

soloula · 29/07/2019 14:54

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman

Cassie71 · 29/07/2019 20:42

The never ending story and the Time Bandits.

AleFailTrail · 29/07/2019 20:42

And not just LWW from the Narnia series! Aside from the Horse and his Boy they all do
The magicians nephew has rings that transport you to a centre world, and from there on to others
The wardrobe, of course
The Horn of Susan, blown in Narnia, summons the pevensies back in Prince Caspian
The painting in the Dawn Treader, and then the wall of water at the end of the world.
The doorway in the school to Aslans country in The Silver Chair.
(SPOILERS)
The train crash in the Last Battle Which permanently sends Jill to Narnia, and Peter, Edmund and Lucy to Aslans Country (Heaven)

Also for older teens one of the pirates of the Caribbean films has the green flash, invert your ship and go to Davy Jones Locker

timeisnotaline · 29/07/2019 20:44

The girl from tomorrow - tv show where she has a transducer for time travel.

Has anyone said dr who??!

byebyebeautiful · 29/07/2019 20:52

If you are looking for movies as well as TV shows then Spirited Away is a great one!

MissRainbowBrite · 29/07/2019 20:56

Magic Animal Friends is a lovely series of books. My DD is 7 and has really enjoyed them, she can also read most of them by herself if she chooses or we have a chapter or two a night as bedtime story.

CarrotCakeMuffins · 29/07/2019 20:56

Princess Mirrorbelle - she comes out of the mirror from her world and causes trouble.

Coldhandscoldheart · 29/07/2019 20:59

The train crash in the Last Battle Which permanently sends Jill to Narnia, and Peter, Edmund and Lucy to Aslans Country (Heaven)

Wait, what? Don’t they all go to heaven? How does jill get stuck in narnia? There’s so much I missed in that book!
