Any doctors on? Or vertigo sufferers? Severe dizziness

For the 'oh goody, a chance to berate someone about being on mumsnet rather than in a&e' brigade, i have already rung 111 who advised ringing my gp for advice, which i have done and am waiting for a call back! I highly doubt im in serious danger but this is debilitating.

I am severely dizzy (couldnt stand up at one point), with clogged ears. The ears bunged up yesterday am, dizziness came on suddenly this am while i was sat in bed trying to rest.

  • i do not feel sick
  • i have no other cold symptoms
  • my ears do not hurt
  • i do not have a headache

I am just dizzy, and a bit weak and trembly. If i make a sudden movement, the rooms spins and lurches like im on a ship at sea or a fairground ride.

Could this be vertigo? I'm an otherwise healthy 33yr old.

Yes sounds like vertigo to me. Happened to me last year. I was just walking down the stairs, perfectly normal and then bang, the world swung upside down and I fell down the last few stairs.

From then on every morning I could barely stand when I got out of bed and had awful vertigo any time I moved my head too fast.

GP gave me a tablet that didn’t help much. After a few weeks it just went away.

Ok this is what worries me - guessing it impacted your work if you were out for weeks!?

Anyone know what causes it? :(

It sounds like labyrinthitis which is vile, you have my sympathy! See doc, they’ll give you anti sickness meds and some exercises to help. It tends to pass... Flowers

Mine took about a week or so to pass.

I had a random sudden onset of dizzyness (happened at work, my boss sent me for an immediate ECG thinking that I was having a heart attack - I work in a health care setting) about 18 months ago.

After about 4 hours at the doctor's (overreaction based on where I work) and tests involving me sitting on a bed and leaning to each side, it was diagnosed as BPPV which is basically benign dizzyness caused by crap in your inner ear Grin I was given exercises to do to shift it (although they made me feel sick) and my boss drove me home.

I couldn't work or drive for about 4 days, but then I woke up on the 5th morning and was completely fine.

Hopefully it's that or something similar, though initially my boss and doctor focussed on checking my heart and blood pressure.

anothernotherone · 29/07/2019 11:32

My blood pressure and heart rate were raised, but that was a reaction to the dizzyness, which freaked me out, not the cause! I was monitored and they settled back to normal, hence focus shifting to inner ear.

Happened to me a few years back. It's horrible and you have my sympathy.

I had some tests done at the GP which found that it wasn't BPPV so had to have Serc and Stemetil for a couple of months.

It stopped me driving for a few months too, which was a bit of a bugger.

Sounds like labyrinthitis (inner ear inflammation/infection).

I was knocked sideways by this a couple of years ago, couldn't stand up, couldn't walk in a straight line. Felt like seasickness, so brought on lots of nausea too. The drugs I was prescribed did some good, but to be frank I needed to be horizontal for about 3/4 days, then slowly back to reality.

I seem to get milder bouts of it now whenever I'm run down, and am more prone to motion sickness.

NoImmediateDanger · 29/07/2019 11:47

Thanks all...still waiting for GP, theyre very busy today.

Still no sickness! If i move slowwwllyyyy i can potter about. Worried about work :(

If it is labyrinthitis you need to rest and take it easy. Overdoing it prolongs the symptoms in my experience. Medication can be helpful (serc aka betahistine for the dizziness and buccastem for the nausea) but you do need to be very careful not to overdo things. Rushing back to work will prolong the effects so take advice from the GP and get signed off if needed

SinkGirl · 29/07/2019 12:00

I wasn’t working at the time - I have twins, no sick days from them! Hopefully it will pass sooner.

Aebj · 29/07/2019 12:04

Have you tried an antihistamine? I only had mild vertigo but an antihistamine worked wonders. Think I took them for 2 days.

NoImmediateDanger · 29/07/2019 12:38

Yeah i had a bad reaction to mosquito bites (uk) yesterday and took ibuprofen and antihistamine (lotaradine) but tbh neither seemed to do much for the bites or my ears!

The verdict is in: labrynthitis. 10points for anyone who guessed!

Oh god it lasts 10days help

I find it helps to lie with a cold cloth over my eyes. And if at all possible, have a sleep.

I got hospitalised with a very severe attack of it the year before last.
