Washing machine creating worrying smell

The last twice I have run the washing machine, my kitchen has been filled with a funny smell. I think it smells like petrol, DH disagrees but can't put his finger on what it actually is (I'm mentioning this in case I am wrong, don't want anyone to get hung up on the petrol thing). There has been no damage to the clothes and no visible signs of anything being wrong with the machine (we've pulled it out as far as we can to get a good look around and underneath). There is no smell on the clothes, nor does there seem to be a smell in the drum itself but there is obviously something emitting from the machine somewhere.

I've tried googling but can only find advice on how to clean and neutralise smells from within the machine (i.e. vinegar runs etc to ensure your clothes don't come out smelly) or when I've searched petrol smell, I get advice on how to get petrol out of clothes. There definitely hasn't been anything like that spilled on any of our clothes which could have caused the smell.

I've getting quite worried now. Really don't want the machine to suddenly catch fire and I'm also shitting myself at the thought of an unexpected cost for a new machine. Does anyone recognise this problem and can it be repaired?

Is it coming from the plug socket?

Likethebattle · 29/07/2019 08:45

Check the plug socket. There was an awful chemical/fish smell in our bedroom every day and it was the spur socket for the shower that was burning.

ParadiseLaundry · 29/07/2019 08:47

Could it be from the rubber? Have you been doing any hot washes?

isabellerossignol · 29/07/2019 08:49

Is it a fishy smell? If so, check the plug. Our electric shower started smelling funny and then it turned out that the inside of the socket was burning.

Oops, someone else has already mentioned that Blush

I don't think it is the rubber, that was one of the first things I checked and it doesn't seem damaged in any way. I hadn't thought of the plug socket but that would make sense. I'll look at that when I get home tonight. Fishy/chemical smell does sound like an accurate description. I'm assuming this would be an easier/cheaper fix that buying a new machine too? Just been googling and scaring myself with the price of them. Our machine is 4 years old (pretty much to the day - I know this because our house had no white goods when we moved in what was 4 years, 1 month ago). I know these things aren't built to last these days but I really hoped I'd get a few more years out of it.
