Odd mole on DD7 - feeling really worried

Does anyone know about odd moles on kids?

DD7 has had a mole on her shoulder for a few years. It was all one colour and paleish brown. I noticed Friday evening that there was a reddish bit on one side.

We went to walk in clinic today and doctor just went ‘yeah that’s weird’ and has referred us to see a dermatologist ASAP.

I’ve been googling and am trying to stay calm and not worry but of course I am really concerned and a bit scared.

We have always been pretty careful with sunscreen although there have maybe been two occasions where she has gone pink. Never been badly burnt though.

Can anyone help at all?

They may have damaged/caught it on something. My DS has one on his neck, gp said once if it changes to get it checked out. Try not to worry they are just being cautious.

Not without seeing it. Anyway, it's being looked at so try not to worry. Even if it is an issue, it's not as if you've left it and ignored it for ages. I'd be surprised if it was something to worry about.

You have done what you need to so no point getting worked up. You being stressed will worry her and won’t change anything. I know it’s scary but try and stay normal as possible.

Dd2 had one removed from her nose when she was 8 (4 years ago) it started as a freckle then grew in size and was uneven and half pink.
We were sent to dermatologists who looked at it through magnifying stuff (im not technical enough lol) and took photographs. They didn’t think it wasn’t dangerous but said we were right to check it out. She kept catching it and it was bleeding so they decided to remove it. They sent it off for testing once it was removed but it came back fine.
Dermatologists will be able to tell by looking at your dds mole, I was told it was extremely rare for a child’s mole to be anything untowards.
Wishing you luck.

It’s highly unlikely for it to be skin cancer on a child. New moles appear and change a lot until adulthood. Moles can get irritated at times by swimsuit straps, bug bites, etc.
A dermatologist is the best course of action. If it’s a suspicious mole (precancerous), they’ll just remove it and she’ll have either no scar or a tiny chicken pox type scar.

Thanks everyone. I think I just needed to talk to some people about it.

I am calm to DD don’t worry. I’ve been very reassuring and non alarmist.

Just privately feeling concerned.

Yes I think I noticed it on the day it changed actually so we are getting checked out really quickly.

Thank you all.

I had the consultant dermatologist look at a mole only for her to respond with ‘oh yes, that’s very unusual’. Not very reassuring at all, is it?!

As others have said, there are many likely and non-scary explanations, but either way, you’re being seen by the people who need to see it.

Thanks so much everyone.

It really helped yesterday to read your responses.

We have an appointment next Wednesday with the dermatologist. I hoped it would be this week but it’s still pretty quick.
