Which is better if you've been?

Depends on the age of your DC - would say docklands for younger children - there's a good play centre there.

Found that Museum of London was geared to school age+

perhapsimight · 28/07/2019 21:26

We are not with kids just grown ups Smile

BlueSkiesLies · 28/07/2019 21:28

I really like the docklands museum

Blowingthroughthejasmine · 28/07/2019 22:42

Definalty musuem of London then, there's not much at docklands I was teeny bit dissapointed.

user1474894224 · 28/07/2019 22:45

I've been to both. Museum of London has all the Roman ruins nearby. And is probably better overall. But Docklands site has Mudlark for under 6's. And is great for slightly older kids - 10+. If it's your first visit and doesn't matter which then Museum of London Bank. X

Justajot · 28/07/2019 22:46

I preferred the Museum of London. But we particularly went to see the Great Fire of London exhibition. I'm not sure what they've replaced that with.

Longdistance · 28/07/2019 22:46

Museum of London, you’d have to pay for exhibitions. Docklands was interesting for adults rather than kids. Though we spent more time at the Docklands museum.

fromthefloorboardsup · 28/07/2019 22:47

They're both two of my favourites. MoL is best for an overview of London (as you might expect) - ancient history to present day. Docklands is (obviously) about the maritime history. I found it fascinating though.

fromthefloorboardsup · 28/07/2019 22:48

Both normally have really good temporary exhibitions on too - I've been to quite a few

Davros · 28/07/2019 23:03

I read that MoL in the City is moving to Smithfield. Either way, I love that one and you can go to the Barbican and sit by the lake

Verite1 · 28/07/2019 23:07

Slavery exhibition at museum of docklands is really interesting (and awful in equal measures). Have been a few times.

user1474894224 · 29/07/2019 07:42

@Davros what lake? I've been a few times...never found a lake. Where is it please. X

Direwolfwrangler · 29/07/2019 07:47

Museum of London is my favourite. And you definitely feel like you’ve ‘done’ it with one visit. It’s also close to St Paul’s for a bit of admiration.

DialANumber · 29/07/2019 07:56

We went to the Great Fire exhibition at MoL and it was really well done, and there was lots in the MoL we didn't get round so I'm keen to go back.

I haven't been to Docklands for a long time but found it v v interesting when I did go..

Hmm, decisions!

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 29/07/2019 07:57

Depends on the age of the child(ten) and their interests really.

For younger children I would recommend the Docklands museum as the MoL can be a bit boring for a child not interested in reading about the history of the city.
Having said that, the MoL runs free workshops where younger children can be hands on with artefacts etc. And the shop is better Smile
The Docklands is good for boat enthusiasts as there are usually some moored close by and there is a cinema next door if you still have any money left.!
I lived between the two museums for 13 years so my kids practically grew up in these two museums. Another place worth visiting is the Museum of Childhood in my old stomping ground of Bethnal Green. That's pretty easy to reach from both places.
Have a great time, whichever you choose.

haveuheard · 29/07/2019 09:10

Depends what they have on. I went to the Docklands Museum a few years ago now when they had a Jack the Ripper Exhibition and we did Museum of London last year with kids when they had some kids events on.

Paraballa · 29/07/2019 13:44

We prefer Docklands. My kids are 5 and 10. The Bank one is good but got boring for my youngest.

Davros · 29/07/2019 14:09

Maybe "lake" is a bit of an exaggeration! The terrace at the Barbican has an open water area but it's bigger than a pond

Nonstopbuttmachine · 29/07/2019 16:12

I read the title as the Museum of Dickheads Blush I'd pay good money to visit such a museum; my ex-husband would have his photo on the wall of fame Grin

Davros · 29/07/2019 17:45

The Museum of Dickheads would need massive premises

RodGallowglass · 29/07/2019 18:18

If you are without children, then MoL.

AwkwardPaws27 · 29/07/2019 19:00

Museum of London Docklands has a great free exhibition called Secret Rivers at the moment.
The museum is more focused on the history of the Docks area, especially the slave trade & WW2.
You can do both if you have a whole day - it's about 10 minutes on the DLR + about 10 mins walk either end.

onceandneveragain · 29/07/2019 20:08

museum of london definitely. docklands is okay and the canary wharf area with the river and boats etc. is quite nice in the sun, but MoL so much more varied and much bigger. postman's park is an interesting place to pop into after/on the way too.

78percentLindt · 29/07/2019 20:15

Also if you are in the MoL area, the Bsnk of England Museum was really interesting - but a visit is probably only an hour or so. I have been with the kids when DH had an investigation at Barts.
Postman's Park is also good - and worth sitting in for lunch if you have sandwiches

Paddington68 · 29/07/2019 20:17

MoL and then after go and read the plaques in Postman Park.
