I can't eat a pub Sunday lunch on my own can I?

I'll look sad.

Live in a village with 3 pubs. The one on the edge does an amazing Sunday roast.

But I have no one to go with. If I drive I'd go to a ransom country pub and probably not care.

I might see someone I vaguely know.

I normally don't mind, even enjoy eating on my own but Sunday lunch just seems taboo.

DD is with her dad and I have nine to ask.

Should I risk it? I don't want to feel awkward. Even phoning up and booking for one makes me feel weird.

i do it all the time.

DaphneFanshaw · 28/07/2019 15:05

Sticky toffee pudding.

Glad you enjoyed yourself op, your dinner looked amazing.

HaileySherman · 28/07/2019 15:06

You totally can. Bring a book and enjoy some "you" time. I've done it plenty. Before i was married, i took a long weekend vacation to a city i enjoyed by myself. Went all out, flight, hotel, etc. Spent a bit of alone time, but surprisingly met up with strangers and had a grand old time. Looking back it was one of my best vacations.

Happynow001 · 28/07/2019 15:09

Yum OP! It all looks so good - I wish I'd gone out to lunch now. I think I will soon - there are some decent pub restaurants near my home and I never think to go there for lunch!

The pork looks good - and I hope you had the rhubarb and ginger crumble to finish. You could (should!) make a regular thing of it now you know it's OK to do so and try something different each time.

Eating on your own sometimes with your book/paper/magazine and some peace and quiet and no washing up is great. I often go out for a full English Sunday breakfast followed by a long stroll to burn off some of the calories- then have a large hot chocolate when I great home. 😁

IvanaPee · 28/07/2019 15:10

Excellent choice!

Chocolatedaim · 28/07/2019 15:11

Oh Sunday roast for 1 sounds so heavenly to me right now. 😁

I am sitting here, reading the thread with a big grin all over my face. Grin I don't know you OP but am very proud of you!
You have broken your duck and can look forward to sampling Sunday lunch at other pubs all Summer long.

Greyhound22 · 28/07/2019 15:37

Well done. I'd love to do things on my own a bit more but I'm terribly self-conscious.

Me and DMIL went to the Toby the other day and a woman was sat on her own and I thought good on her!

NoSauce · 28/07/2019 15:40

Yay good for you.

I'm also grinning and proud, but why must the poor duck be broken? Confused

I'd have gone for the pork too.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 28/07/2019 15:51

I'd give my left arm to go and eat a roast on my own right now Grin

rosegoldwatcher · 28/07/2019 16:08

Utterly
Yum yum, Roasted Broken Duck with Orange Sauce!

Shannith · 28/07/2019 16:13

@rosegoldwatcher @UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername it's strange it was a duck.

Sunday lunch, the final frontier of solo eating, broken.

When I went to pay the landlady assumed I was a visitor - it's the kind of place people visit - and was surprised I lived in the village. I told her I was enjoying a child free no cooking day. True.

Didn't mention that a load of strangers on the internet made me do it 😀

I'd have loved it if she was a mumsnetter and gave you a discount and a wink Wink

Weebitawks · 28/07/2019 16:27

Roast dinners are my favourite. Not talking to people is my favourite. I would LOVE to go for one solo

1forAll74 · 28/07/2019 16:27

I would go on my own for Sunday roast etc, but maybe not in my village pub as I know everyone, and I wouldn't want people chatting to me about nothingness things, I would prefer peace and quiet to enjoy the food.

But having said that, other people are always on their phones, even waiting for their food, or even eating their food !! I don't have a phone as such.

GuernseyDonkey1 · 28/07/2019 16:30

Glad you went!

But does nobody else want to know what 'Something Soup' is in the starters?!

Maybe somebody couldn't read Chef's handwriting?

stucknoue · 28/07/2019 16:59

Do it! If it's easier, go somewhere you won't know anyone but it's fine to eat alone. I'm getting used to it now, and some places are easier than others (cheaper places I find are better because the posh pubs always have big groups celebrating happy things and I'm not feeling happy!). But maybe get yourself a lunch buddy, I think I'll start a "fed up with Sunday's on your own" club!

midsomermurderess · 28/07/2019 18:00

Why ever not? I was going to today (having a few days off on my ow), but decided I wasn't hungry enough. Had I been, I'd have done it without a second thought.

HappyLoneParentDay · 28/07/2019 18:15

SIXTEEN POUNDS FIFTY?!?! For a bit of pork, veg & a Yorkshire pudding? Seriously? Where of earth do you live?!

Tavannach · 28/07/2019 19:28

So glad you enjoyed it. Maybe you should become an occasional regular and work your way through the menu.

Shannith · 28/07/2019 20:43

@HappyLoneParentDay I know!

It is a nice pub, lovely billiard, nice views etc.

Pretty standard prices for where I live though.

I can justify it now I don't drink as that would have been 2 large glasses of wine without batting an eyelid.

@ThatCurlyGirl I wish there was a secret signal.

I can't offer her a Pom bear. I did once to someone at a child's party and we both knew Wink

I don't know what the fuck a lovely billiard is but I'm sure it has one.
