Yorkshire Dales disappointment

Just come back from a holiday in the north of England where the weather and scenery were both amazing. We spent time in the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales and were blown away by how friendly and helpful all the people we met in Cumbria were. People made conversation everywhere we went and service was with a smile at every location. The contrast in the Dales was stark and disappointing. We barely saw a smile and nobody we spoke to (people working in the tourism industry, not just random people) were interested in conversing. Maybe it was the exceptionally hot weather putting people in a bad mood but it didn’t create a good impression. Were we just unlucky with the people we met or is there a difference in friendliness between the 2 counties?

Had an amazing week earlier this year at Lawn House in Swaledale. Was an amazing place and the people very friendly indeed. Hoping to go again.

Well people always say that about Londoners too but apart from those too busy to talk (off to work, and I am sometimes like that myself), I have found that a lot of people do chat.

@NannyR
Nanny, you are exactly right. People are all different. Plus you never know what a stranger is thinking. Could an unfriendly person just had an argument with family or co-worker? Could their child have gotten in trouble? You just never know and in no way should anyone judge anyone else until they’ve walked a mile in their shoes. I also think that sometimes people expect too much from others. Thank you for your answer - I feel exactly like you do. 😊

We had a holiday in north Wales and the locals (even business owners) were a bit rude and generally ignored us. The friendliest people were English people who were living there.

The nicest people were the Scots on the west coast. Everyone was lovely and really helpful and open. They seemed so happy as well, in spite of the constant rain at the time 😂
