Which is the best Harry Potter to read in another language?

Trying to learn Italian. I know the story so that should help. Already have bk 1 and the audiobook in French so probably not that one. In a bubble of indecisiveness, help me out.
(Or recommend me another book + audiobook that's not quite so expensive but easy to read!)

What else are you doing to learn Italian?

MoltenMountain · 26/07/2019 21:38

I go to lessons and do my homework 😇
Tried watching some films but didn't really follow.

Watch shirt TV shows, like Friends, so you can watch a few times:

  1. Italian dubbed with English subtitles.
  2. Italian dubbed, Italian subtitles
  3. Italian dubbed, no subtitles.

By then you should have picked up loads. Repeat next episode. Short episodes are better than an entire film cos even I switch off after half an hour and I'm C2 in Spanish Grin

HP1 should be easiest in Italian, I imagine. Or try Hunger Games, short basic sentences, interesting vocabulary.

Anything young adult you know the story of. The trashier the better really, although the translation quality was much better in Harry Potter. My trashy poison was Star Trek, Buffy and Angel. Worked well for me. Also enjoyed Independence Day and Bridget Jones Diary - the footnotes explaining British cultural references were probably the best bit.

Young Adult is good because it generally used simple sentence structures and ideas.

I did cope with various French classics (3 Musketeers etc) that I had read in English before but the past historic was a nasty shock to the system! Not sure if Italian has any nasties like that in supposedly "easy" stories - my DH hates trying to read dairy stories to our 4yo because the language is so complicated!

My Italian teacher says that the Harry Potter books are really badly translated into Italian. I have the Prisoner of Azkaban but she suggested I try other books. I'm apparently working more or less at GCSE level, I'm reading older kids books!

HP one or two. I read them in French and Italian and found them easy to understand - basic setting the scene, uncomplicated dialogue and concepts.

It's a long time since I was a young adult and I can't really think of anything else I've read that would be that kind of range.
Llama that's interesting to hear, I'd assumed they would have a decent translation quality. Do you have any suggestions?
